Default Carboard in front of radiator?

One of my frinds put carboard in front of his radiaotor due to car warming up way too slowdue to cold winters. Two weeks later his radiator blew (the top seal between the aluminum and the plastic started leaking) Is this any way connected??

lol well seeing how the fins and tubes designed on radiators are designed for maximum air flow capacity between each layer, than my guess would be YES blocking off that airflow would cause a radiator to possibly overheat... the neck around the lid of my radiator cracked before also but just cuz it was old not cause i put a peice of material infront of it restricting its airflow...

I was stationed in AK while in the military. I always had cardboard in front of my radiator and it never blew. Maybe it is a bad rad. If you didn't put cardboard in front of it, the windchill at speeds would literally freeze all the fluids in your car. I still do it now and I got out and moved back to KS.

how many miles ? i think thats just how the civic radiators die. my 94 did it at about 180k and my 92 did it at about 165k. neither car over heated or anything they just started leaking form the top

yeah dude than that's most likely ur answer is that just by age/usage it took a **** cuz it looks like quite a few of us had that issue, and without using cardboard.... even tho it prolly helped for a bit i still wouldnt do it lol...

there is no way its related. the seal is just a rubber seal and the aluminum is crimped over the plastic. the rubber seals eventually deteriorate.

using tap water is also bad in your cooling system. all the additives after being heated turn into a sandy powder and that coarse powder eats away at aluminum and rubber.

I assume that this is more of an aerodynamic fuel economy aid than a cold weather device (not unlike the rear diffuser also found on the VX). That is not to say that this wouldn't serve a similar function to that of a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator during the winter, just that it was probably not originally intended by Honda for that function.

I should also note that I continue to be astounded by your seemingly limitless supply of photos and obscure parts information.

I wish I had more info on it. I could probably find it if I looked though. Maybe later.

My Honda photo folder says it currently has 26,990 files in 370 folders. The 6th gen folder probably has the most content. 9,180 Files (images).

My Honda "tech" folder has 147,124 files in it right now. 1,926 folders.

man NOFX you have everything down when someone wants pictures and info about it. as for the front grill for the vx, i think it serves for keeping the temperature high so the engine can stay on lean burn for better fuel economy.

really the cardboard thing shouldn't do him any good... that's what the thermostat is for.

well, maybe if he's right on the interstate before his car has warmed up. that way he'd have enough airflow to cool the coolant in the radiator and slow the engine warming up...

of course all hypothetical, unfortunately i don't live in a place cold enough to test this out safely.

the cover seen on the VX model if I am not mistaken is there when the vehicle is not equipped with A/C from the factory. my 93 VX had that cover until i decided to swap to a B18 and install A/C. If you leave that cover there, the A/C condensor will not get any air flow to allow for proper operation of the A/C system, main effect will be the A/C is not cold.

Been doing it to some of my cars for years. Gets cold here in Spokane. Our VW is like this and we just put a small square of cardboard in front of the radiator. Maybe covering about 25%. Car stays warmer... but has never overheated. But I have some people put too big of a piece in a and not have enough radiator exposed. Since my CX has the 2.0 in it now, it stays warm. But hen again once snow hits... it is parked

You're thinking of another part.

The part shown above is only listed for the VX models. It is not listed for any other models that don't come with A/C or even the models that do come with A/C.

This part (grille cover) is only available on 1992-1995 Civic VXes. Other trims without A/C did not have it as an option.

This part (condenser cover) is available on 93-95 2DR DX/EX, 92-95 3DR CX/DX/Si/VX and the 92-95 4DR DX/EX/LX.
