Default preforated, or non-preforated?

im interested in finally getting my winter jacket.

i live in so cal, and lately, we've been getting low 30 degree nights, and im on the market for some winter protection.

ive had my eye on the Sonic 2.0 jacket from joe rocket. but it comes in perforated, and non perforated. both of them have liners, so im not understanding why one is better than the other? can anyone shed some insight. thanks.

all i can tell, the perforated has all those tiny holes, but does wind really make it through them?

I have the non-perf.... i hate little holes in leather....

I also have a summer jacket so this thing getting hot and needing holes isn't a huge issue. Seems to me the holes would make the jacket wear faster.

im not really interested in how the 2 look, im trying to figure out the real function of the perforated holes, do they really make a difference?

leather is leather, im sure a few holes (vents) wont affect the life of the jacket.. i doubt it will rip.

but how is comfort compared in the 2 styles?

Perf'd makes a difference. You won't be able to tell the difference at a stop, but once you're moving, the extra airflow is very welcome (especially on hot summer days).

I would say go with the perf'd version. If it gets cold, you can always layer up (light sweater on the inside, heavyweight sweater/windbreaker over the jacket if necessary).

Under 50 degrees and perforated gear dont mix - you can layer to keep warm but it wont block the wind. Perf is fantastic for the summertime, so I'd pick up a perf jacket for most of your riding, and find a cheap textile (non vented) for winter use. Thats what I've done

alright, im prolly going to go with non-prefed... im going to basically dedicate this to winter use, or a brisk fall day.. like i said, i have a textile i use normally, but its not cutting it. i need to step my leather game up.

i work swing shift, so going to work in the afternoon, at 70-80 degree's my textile is ok, but going home close to midnight, if not sometimes later, those freeway speeds when i drops down to 32-36.. its not enough protection.

so since im trying to get the best protection for 30 degree weather, i think i should be going non pref'ed.

Thats a pretty big temperature swing - why not a textile with zippered vents and a good inner layer? that should cover you - open the vents and take the liner out during the day, layer up and closer the vents at night.

my joe rocket jacket is not perforated, it only has these 'side vents' for which you remove a panel to reveal a vented mesh fabric. it is effing hot in the summer, no matter if the vents are opened or closed.

And summer is hotter than 70-80 deg.

perf'd leather sucks when your jacket maker includes an inferior liner.

the dainese liner though, is not inferior. my flanker's liner was the warm in the winter, the perfs made it cool in the summer. the liner is made of "puffies" and is fully sleeved. it's somewhat substantial though, so the jacket fits 1 size smaller with the liner in.

plus it's dainese?

i got a perforated jacket and I live in Socal. If you wear a sweater underneath the jacket, you will be fine, unless you are riding for over an hour on the freeway at below 45 degrees....

I think my neck and hands get cold more so than my core. I need to buy a balaclava at cyclegear. I bought a silk liner for my gloves for added warmth... but they wont do crap hahah.

i have forearm full leather gloves, they do ok at night, and a balacava and a neck warmer.. so im good. only thing really really cold, is my unprotected areas.. my eyes have been catching some updraft, and making my eyes a little bit.

i have a scoropion 700 and a chin skirt, and its pretty good, but i doubt i'll be able to completely stop that wind leak.

anyways, i have a textile, and its just not enough, i normally wear like 3 shirts, and a thermal, and i can still feel it in the elbows.

sometimes i wear 2 pairs of pants.. lol, but does nothing for my ankles.

I love my perforated MotoGP jacket for summer. It keeps me very comfortable when at speed, even in 90+ degree weather.

The liner is kinda useless though, and its perforated in the sleeves as well but the liner is just a vest. So when it gets cool, I wear my textile with a sweatshirt under it.
