Default P30 Question

I've searched for 2 days and cant find it, thought I found it before but I guess not. Anyway, does the P30 use the knock sensor? If it matters I have a 95 civic coupe, manual, w/ a b16.

A P30 will look for, and throw a code for knock sensor if you don't have one on the engine and have it wired up properly.

...a P28 doesn't look for one, and thus, won't throw a code for one.

you dont need a knock sensor.... you should already have a p28 get it chipped and deleted. thats what 99% of OBD1 people run. it also just detunes your ecu so DELETE

i have a p30 ecu on my b16 also. D3 on the ECU is for the knock. For me, if I don't have it wire, it will set my check engine light on. Hope this helps.

Trust me just get a P28 ECU from any 92-95 Civic Si/EX and have it rechipped to either run a B16A engine, or better yet, have someone local in the ATL area chip it with a tunable program like Uberdata or Crome and have it tuned on a dyno.

No offense to anyone with a P30, but it actually isn't the ideal ECU to run. If you don't have one they're very hard to find, and more expensive, and with P28 tuning so cheap these days it makes no sense to waste time and effort finding a stock P30 that will make less power and require extra wiring for the knock sensor.

Its false.JDM P30 will always look for KS.I've one,it does look for it.If i remove the KS plug,it throwa code.ONLY USDM ECU THAT IGNORES KS.Want to correct you.

for the record p30 ECU suck as in comparison to a chipped p28

I just installed a stock p30 ecu on my b16
first thing happen soon as the car got warm is the C.E.L. came out (probably because of the knock sensor) and vtec does not kick in as hard as it use to

If you need one for BAR then get one but for street use just use a p28 chipped to run a b16

running one wire seems cheaper than chipping a P28

why do people not like the P30, I have a JDM P30 wired knock and have no problems/cels.....just wondering

It's called wheel horsepower, tunability, and extra features such as drag launch, check engine shift light, etc. that can easily be programmed into a P28.

If someone already has a P30 I say chip it when you can if you want more power. The P28 is so popular because it's very abundant, and many people don't get the proper ECU with their swaps in the first place, the P28 is the easy, logical choice.

The thing to look out for is cheapo ebay chips for P28s - some people really never should be making chips because they have no clue what they're doing. I'd say find a local Uberdata or Crome guy and pay him to install and tune the program on a dyno, or hit up Phearable.net.

I understand the tunability of the P28, but if your not prepared to drop a couple$$ on dyno tune whats the point of running a chip other than a stock base map with sensors disabled and a fancy cel shift light... all I 'm saying is I didn't think the base map was that bad on the P30

Okay let me clarify my own personal opinion, and I can't speak for anyone else here. Just remember I never said "P30 runs like ****!" or anything like that.

The OP still never really said he already has a P30 ECU. If he didn't already have one then finding one could prove to be a pain in the ***, and it will cost more than the run of the mill P28 ECU since the P30 is WAY less common.

Secondly a lot of people doing a B16A swap already have a P28 if they're doing the swap in an EX or Si hatch from 92-95. Why buy a $150.00 (or worse actually) P30 from a salvage yard when it can be chipped cheaper? Even Uberdata/Crome install/tuning would be under $200.00 unless someone is assraping you.

A B16A with a stock P30 ECU will run like...a stock B16A with a stock computer. I never said it'd run like ***, throw check engine lights, etc. or be problematic. If you wire up the knock sensor, make sure VTEC is wired and there are no actual problems with the engine a B16A with P30 will be very stockish.

Also I did say you can have a P30 chipped if you've already got one.

I've owned a B16A2 swap and I know first hand, for a FACT that a stock P30 ECU won't make as much whp as a good base map/"tuned" chipped ECU, P28 or otherwise. My wife's car dyno'd 143whp with a rechipped P28, but ran worse on a stock P30 ECU that I borrowed from a friend. Only better thing about the P30 was it got better gas mileage, thus I used it for a road trip.

Again it's all about the chip you have, or if you get a tunable program and have it tuned. Many dumbases sell "Spoon chips y0!" on E Bay and they throw check engine lights, run the engine like ****, etc. because they suck.

I know two reputable sources that can chip ECUs with well-known good base maps depending on the engine - Phearable.net and Kenji Plennert. Other than that it's up to the owner to find a local source that can do Uberdata or Crome.

Lastly I'll repeat it once more - the map on the P30 isn't "bad" but it's not optimal for what 99% of H-T users want, and that's power. I would not take out a perfectly good P30 and swap it for a Ebay chipped P28 on an otherwise stockish B16A with minor bolt-ons.

cool man that makes more sense, I was just picturing the next thread as being I got a JDM skunk2 chip and now I'm blowing black smoke out of the back of my car and getting 20 mpg.....I have a P28 waiting for a a map maybe I 'll get a chip from one of these guys and go to the track and see if I can notice a diffference ro maybe I 'll just use the *** dyno....thanks for the insight B18c5- EH2,
