can you tell a shop that you wont pay unless they do a PERFECT color match?
ok so Im gonna get my fender and maybe my bumper painted soon, I will find a good shop and all that, im just worried about if they are going to be able to match my paint. its a pearl/metallic paint.
I was wondering, can you put in writing that you will not pay a cent if its not a perfect match? will a shop do that?

thats a little over bored really. the better question would be, are you willing to pay to have it done properly? if you want just the fender sprayed, 99.9% says it will not be the same exact color. it might be, it could happen, but chances are, NO! to do it so that there will not be any problems, at all, if you have them spray the fender and bumper, the door meeting up to that fender, the fender meeting up to the bumper on the opposite side and the hood will have to be "blended". we charge isurance companies for this anytime we have to replace a body panel or when we have to paint close to where the next panel meets. it is expecting to much to panel paint something and have it match "perfectly". think about it. the paint they use will more than likely not be the same they sprayed from the factory, they will not have the robotic arms that spray the car on the assembly line, nor will the air pressures be the same. with metalics air pressure and distance from panel make all the difference in the world. i have had customers that i could explain this till i was red in the face and have their full agreement fuss when the paint doesnt match. there again, you get what you pay for. there is nothing wrong with being picky as long as you are willing to pay for it.

ok thanks for replies.
I have heard that some shops will use some kind of computer program that can take a picture of the color and match it really well, anyone have any info on this?

I have that in my shop. Dupont provided us with the camera. It takes 3 pictures of the paint and then gives you the closest matches. Sometimes it's not even the same car that pops up. It works pretty good but you still need to blend. The program will actually show you how it blends into the factory paint on the screen from the picture it took and the color samples. It is a very helpfull tool but not the be all end all.

yeah, i use PPG and thiers takes like 7 or 8 shots of the color. and as weird as it is, sometimes it brings up a code for a different car. sorry if that came off harsh. wasnt intended to be.
teg, if i were you, i would ask around for a reputable shop and just go by there and tell them what you want. tell them what you are affraid of, matching, and see what they say. if they tell you they can paint just those parts and have it match perfectly, then accept no less. i painted a fender yesterday for an older guy that just really doesnt care if it matches the rest of his truck, but i made sure he understood that it was not going to. a lot of people think that white is an easy color to match, NOT! its stupid how many colors go into these colors.

if u pay for the shop to blend then your probably not gonna notice a color difference unless the shop sucks. As far as cameras, sometimes they nail the color and sometimes they dont. I never completely trust one to give me an exact color match. At my shop we redo the paint job until there is no complaints if they pay to blend it. That's just the shop I paint at tho. Not to sure how many others are the same way

yes they do! I hate matching white. people always say, white is white what's the big deal. man they couldn't be more wrong. I'd rather match a silver or gold any day.

remember the prophrt camera is a blendable color , you cant get a perfect color match due to the pigments in the paint . depending on the year of the car and the brand of paint that was used on the car originally. good luck you might get it to llok the same but it be a chance to take due to the fact that with metallics and peals now a days its hard.
Apparently, paintscratch.com can get you an exact paint match of the oem paint on your car. My roomate has used it and he really like it. I have some, just havent used it yet. The replies on their website of customers is pretty thorough and is filled w/ highly regards. They apparently can match to your exact color by using the different numbers in your paint code and depending on when your car was produced.

thats nothin new, its common knowledge that you can match a paint with the code, problem is, the same paint code can often look different, age, and other factors will affect a paint color.
