Default Figure this one out

I got a friend who has a really odd problem on her car. She says (she is deaf so its sort of hard to communicate with her) that she has a gas leak only when she turns the heat on. She lives in FL and when she is down there has never had a problem b/c she only runs the AC, but when she came up for school in VA she ran the heater b/c its cold obviously and she got 60 miles to a FULL tank. Anyone have any ideas?

GTFO, douche bag.

To the OP - I'm thinking it has nothing to do with the heater. A heater should not cause any decrease in MPG (nothing noticable, anyway). Any CEL's pop up?

Check the fuel system for any leaks (rail, injectors, lines)? 60mpg is horrible obviously.

No CEL's. We're going to check the fuel system after xmas break for leaks but when we're under the hood we don't smell any gas or anything.

What about the fuel tank itself? (doubtful, but just make sure). When was the last tune-up done? Did she notice the car running crappy? The last time the fuel filter was replaced?

And out of curiosity, what year/trim is the Civic? And mileage?

Its not a civic, but its sort of a generic question so I thought I'd give HT a shot. I don't know about the fuel filter replacement, but the last tune up was earlier this year after she noticed the car was acting funny, me and one of my friends did the tune up.

1.) why does she think it's leaking fuel? Is there a puddle of gasoline under the car somewhere?

2.) does she smell exhaust or gasoline when she turns on the heater?

3.) have you checked the emissions canister on the firewall for leaks and/or ruptured hoses?

4.) does she know the difference between having the air conditioning on and off?

Again, what mileage? What did your tune-up consist of? (plugs, wires, cap, rotor?)
