b18 is a b18 its the same block. The internals are what makes it different.

Unless you can take the engine apart, no, there is no way to tell by exterior examination alone.

That's what I hate about JDM B18Cs.

Easiest and cheapest, is remove the oil pan and look for the R stamp on the crank.

^ Also wouldn't the head stamp have PR3 on it and green paint by the distributor?

Were talking the block, not the head.

Hi guys,

I'm about to buy a 2000 ITR today. I can't see anywhere on the block that has a VIN. I clearly see the B18C5 and the plate on the transmission is missing. The owner claims the plate on the transmission was lost during a tranny fluid flush and the engine itself does not have the VIN. Is he correct? Its' for a Canadian spec ITR.

Anything else I should be watching out for? The car seems to drive very nice and I will be doing a compression test later today.

Thanks SOO MUCH GUYS!

He lost the VIN plate while flushing transaxle fluid? I can't fathom how that is at all possible.

The VIN on the block will be on the backside, right above the oil pan. You will need to raise the car to see it...I think.

Thanks for the reply guys. I will look for the VIN on the block later.

Are there anything else I should be watching otu for? I've read a few of the FAQ regarding purchasing an R and they aren't that informative. I've checked for the rear connector bar, its there.

The car also has a JDM front. The head gasket has been replaced and he claims that his VAFC is set to hit VTEC at 5200 rpm. Is that a good thing?

I'm coming from 1995 Supra Turbo and I don't know too much about VTEC controllers.

RED flag, that's the biggest line of BS I've ever heard in my life, I'd actually have the guy raise his car up and get that VIN from the back and take it to your local PD and/or CARFAX it. A good way to do this is to tell the guy you want it taken to an Acura/Honda dealership in your presence to have a mechanic inspect it, and tell the mechanic to write the motors VIN down for you. It might sound crazy at first, but this is protecting YOUR OWN ***, just in case...

The VIN you're speaking of is riveted on, and just don't "FALL" off, you have to actually work at it to make it come off, and for him to say it fell off during a tranny fluid change is a complete lie.

Thanks for all your help. The bastard won't let me do a compression test on it even when I was willing to pay an extra $500 on top of our AGREED price last night.

I will take my time as I would love to have the perfect R just like my Supra.

To the OP, sorry for going OT on your thread...!
