ok i have a 99 civic ex all stock it has 120,xxx miles on it and i think it still has its original clutch but i don't know i bought the car used 8 months ago with 104,xxx. my problem is when I'm costing and put the clutch in i get a whining i only realize it in first and second gear i also realize it when i down shift into second....it seems louder when it's cold out and seems to get a little better once the car warms up. what could this be....clutch, trans fluid, bearings??? thanks for any pointers

for the most part the transmission is in good shape there is a little grind in first but seems to come and go. aside from that i haven't had a problem with it until now.

Try changing the fluid out to honda's new MTF formula for the 07+ honda's that are stick. Makes an amazing improvment over honda's older MTF or any other fluid.

 

I agree with the last guy check you fluid first then think about bearings.

 

Wrong with all the stuff you guys mentioned.. it is definately your input shaft bearing or your throw out bearing. In my civic, my tranny made the same similar noises you got so i changed the throw out bearing and put in honda MTF fluid and still got the same results. And than i bought a input shaft bearing and used honda mtf agian and my noise went away.. Try to search "Input Shaft Bearing" you will get alot of results on noisey trannys.

 

I too vote for the throwout bearing. Mine was going bad and I had a similar noise.

yeah thats what it sounds like. what do u think it would cost to have the input bearing or throwout bearing replaced? also is this something that needs to be done now or can it wait for a while? it is my DD and i want to make sure that everything is in working order but i dont have a whole lot of cash at my disposal

 

Checking was the first easy thing. I have the same problem and we just replaced the throw out so its the input shaft bearing. I am going to try to make it through winter but if you have the money and the resources do it asap. Imo. You can ruin you trans if you let it go long enough... Fingers crossed that mine makes it.

 

yeah i dont wanna wait too long maybe ill do it over my Christmas break....any idea what could cause this is it jus age or is it from someone driving the car too hard....?

 

I recommend changing the input shaft bearing soon. I remeber i driven my civic with the input shaft bearing 400 miles on the high way and than another 400 miles back home, it driven fine but the fact it was eating my clutch away. So if anything just try to change it. Hey Ek Forever Guy how you doing man!! LOL

 

i called advanced for mine and the input shaft bearing is about 30 bucks and the throw out is like 20...also you might want to replace the oil seal as well...so look at about 80 in parts at the most plus labor...or do it yourself...i was told it is pretty easy for the most part...

 

yeah i would like to be able to do it myself but im not that familular with transmissions and i dont have the time to do it im down at school so i dont have the tools here too. i called my local honda dealership and it is going to cost $9XX to get the two bearings replaced and a new clutch. so i dont know what im going to do as it stands.

 

you could always just find a cheap tranny...

That's what I did, ex tranny with 70,000 miles for $150 from a junkyard. Pulled it myself.

 

yeah but I'm unfamiliar with transmissions, and i don't have the supplies or time to do the work on it. do u think it would be cheaper to jus buy a used trans replace what needs to be replaced and then take it and have someone drop it in?

 

or you could buy a new gear kit and it come with all seals and bearing you need for like 300...so then you would have pretty much a new trans...

 

yeah i may do that too....i talked to the guys at honda and to rebuild my trans it is going ot be like 1k to 1.5k which is way to much so i talked to the ppl that do trans work for the mazda dealer i work at and they quoted me 500-600 which is a lot more reasonable i will probably end up doing that this summer when i have the time and money to go with out a car for a day or two.
