Default hiccups at idle

hey guys i have a 91 civic lx sedan with the d15b2 motor.
it was throwing a code 8 so i replaced the distributor and the code when away, but there is still a weird hiccup when i'm sitting at idle.
my idle is at just under 1k maybe 800rpm, i cannot get it any lower.
when i put the distributor on i set timing at 18btdc but the distributor is set all the way retarded.

i'm thinking it might be the pcv valve hose. it has some duct tape on it so i think there is a hole somewhere on the hose. the hose is $26 at honda and i don't want to spend the money if that is not what it needs.

or could there be something wrong with the distributor i just bought? i know it shouldn't be all the way retarded to get 18btdc.

the car has new plugs, cap, rotor, distributor, o2 sensor and the pcv valve is a little grimy. i'm replacing the pcv valve today.
TIA
and a beer to the first correct answer

you haven't explained why you have the timing fully retarded. how does it idle/run/drive when timing is set to base?

the timing is all the way retarded, and is reading 18-20degs btdc.
the distributor is all the way retarded, turned towards bumper.
when i put the distributor on i had it centered and checked the timing and it was way off. so i adjusted it till it was right, the closest i could get was 20btdc with the dizzy all the way retarded.
the car runs fine sometimes it will bog a little on take off, but the only problem is the hiccup when sitting at a light.

oh and don't even ask why i'm still up

When I mentioned returning your timing to base what I really meant was, roll up your sleeves and prepare to get dirty. I would pull the timing belt off the cam gears (for the love of God make sure your mark the belt and gears so you put it back on where you pulled it off from <--- very important) and turn the crank manually until it's at tdc. Then put the belt back on, slide your dizzy to a roughly neutral position (as close to 0 as possible) and then re-time it from there.

I only say this because there is NO reason why any Honda should ever need to be retarded THAT much just to get close to being timed properly. This should help you along. Cheers!

yeah i was thinking about doing that, but really didn't want to. you think it might be off a tooth or something?

IF you have an a6 head/cam/cam gear on your b2 block then you that's right. My car did the samething, the best I could get the timing the dist was all the way retarded. The timing is off half a tooth, nothing an adjustable cam gear can't fix!

Can you explain the hiccup? Does it happen all the time or just every few seconds or so? Does it seem to effect performance?

it happens every time i stop and sit at idle, it will hiccup every 3-4seconds. then go normal. it just sputters a little, you can feel it thru the exhaust it will puff a little each time it hiccups.
it drives normal and if i hold the throttle above idle it won't hiccup

Those symptoms are indicative of the timing not being set properly. You may not want to but what I suggested before will be the only way to completely remedy the problem. Or your could build up a resistance the 'hiccup' and pretend it's not there. Ignorance is bliss you know!

so i checked the belt and it looks ok, but the belt is super loose.
i can't find the tension bolt on my motor.
if anyone knows where the tension bolt on the D15B2 motor is at could you let me know.

ok i found the bolt
i tightened the belt and the cam gear was off 2 teeth, YES I SAID 2 MOTHER ******* TEETH
i'm letting it warm up right now so i can set the timing.
it's running so much better already.
thanks guys.
true to form i sent you a im.
thanks for saying the belt might be off. i thought that in the back of my mind, but really didn't want to look at it. i've done a few timing belts in the past so i'm good at getting it on. it's not even hard, but just a pain in the *** job. kinda like brake pads. super easy, but a pain in the ***
