I just picked up a 1990 Accord EXR, and when I go and start it (cold start) it dies right away....

if i start it and give it gas it runs fine...then i can turn it off and start it up no problem without giving gas...

i read that the older accords start by hitting the gas pedal before you start the car?

is that true? or do I just have anohter problem?

 

there is no need to pump the gas before you start that year accord, it is fuel injected and not a carburated.

if it was carb.'d you would do that to set the choke.

you having to hit the gas after it starts to keep it running is another issue, possibly a sign you have an idle air control problem or some other maintance issue.

 

No Carb, no peddle pump
If it runs fine after you get it going that sounds like it could be a fuel system problem. Week Fuel pump, dirty fuel filter or clogged injectors.

Do you notice any hesitation or lose of power at higher RPM's or under load (going up a hill)?

Does the choke work properly? Before the engine is warmed up, do you see the RPMS reving higher, maybe 1.5-2k RPM?

You are in Toronto. It is a bit cold now. I do not think it should be doing that, but this is some seriously harsh weather at this time of the year. I would run some fuel injector cleaner through it as a first shot at seeing whats up with it.

I have the same problem, but I do that out of habit. I used to have a 85 K5 Blazer and that big bitch took a while to get warmed up, choking it was necessary(lol).

Anyway as was said above, no pressing on gas pedal needed for our Accords since they're fuel injected. If you have to do that to keep it running you have some other underlying problem.

but how hard would it be to change the fuel pump?

 

I love the people that think that pushing the gas pedal to the floor and cranking the car is going to start it easier. Little do they know that it actually cuts the fuel. lol

 

One other thing that it could be with these symptoms is your ECT sensor (engine coolant temp). If your taking it to a shop ask them how much it would cost to do a test on your ECT sensor and run a fuel pressure test to check your pump.

If you want you could try replacing the fuel filter yourself first to see if that helps. It won't help if it is your ECT that is defective though

x2...doing that to a fuel injected car will flood it...except in ur case

 

You can't flood a fuel injected car by pumping the pedal. The only way you flood a fuel injected car is if you keep cranking it and it doesn't ignite the fuel and fire up. The de-flood a fuel injected car you can hold the pedal to the floor and the ECU will cut the fuel until you let back off the pedal.

 

where can I find this ECT?

 

I'm not 100% sure about the F22A* engines. I think the thermo sensor is the one on the side of the thermostat housing. It is attached to the left side of the intake manifold. I believe that the thermo switch on the left front of the head is for the fan relays??????

 

the connectors on the top rad hose housing and thermo housing are the fan switches...the actual temp sensors are in the following locations on the f22a 1) on the left side of the motor just under the distributor and 2) behind the motor just right of the rear motor mount. the wires you'll be looking for on these sensors are 1 wire connectors with a black rubber housing on the head....be careful not to break the rubber housing when pulling it off because they do dry rot.....good luck

 

what you need to do is turn the car on, press the pedal to the floor and release it before starting the car. This tells the car that it needs to add more gas when starting.

alright here is an update:

I no longer have to press teh pedal to start it anymore, I dont know if this is because I started driving the car regularly (because it was sitting for a few months).

Also there was a pinhole in the high pressure gas line near the tank, which I had patched up.

Also the oil pressure sending unit was leaking oil onto my oil filter which then dropped onto my downpipe, I also had that fixed.

the pin hole in the gasline was your problem pressing your pedal didnt make a difference you you cranked multiple times it built enough pressure to turn over and fire.

 

My 1990 accord has no problems starting normal but one thing i do now is. Turn the key and let the fuel injectors spray fuel wait a second then i fully turn the key and crank over the car

 

Waiting for a second before turning your car over does allow the fuel pump to pressurize the fuel system. But there isn't any fuel being sprayed in to the combustion chamber until the engine is actually being turned over. The ECU will automatically tip in an extra amount of fuel on startup based on info received from the appropriate sensors.

Yea, make sure you pump the pedal a couple times to set the choke. This will help the car start easier. Also, if the car isn't starting very easy, try holding your foot to the floor and then turning the key over. The car should start right up when you do this.

Honestly though, holding the pedal to the floor will cut the fuel completely because the ECU will see you with the pedal to the floor and know that you're trying to unflood the car. The ECU also compensates for changes in atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature using the MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor and ECT (engine coolant temperature) sensor and from reading these values will inject more fuel when it's cold or less when it's warm outside. So no, pumping the pedal won't do you a bit of good.
