What do you guys do when approaching a stop light? Downshift, stay in gear, neutral?
I was just wondering what the majority of HT does when coming to a stop in their cars. What I do anytime I need to slow down or stop is just put the car in neutral, and use my brakes or the vehicles wieight to stop. Or, when when I have to pick up speed again I just put it in the gear that would suit that speed best.
Is there any problems with this? I find downshifting a pain, but I will do it sometimes for no real reason. Also some people just leave it in say 4th or 5th and coast in then when the RPMS reach ~2k they push in the clutch and go into neutral.
What do you guys do? What puts the LEAST strain on the vehicle, and which is the best for fuel savings?

i coast sometimes, sometimes i downshift, sometimes i neutral......i hate it when people downshift and dont rev match tho

I always down shift no matter how fast I'm going, its a habit now lol I only down shift all the way down to second and then use my brakes the rest of the way. As far as fuel economy goes I know it wastes more gas because the revs stay higher and you have to blip the throttle to rev match, but I would rather waste a little more gas then have to do my brake more often.

Most people don't downshift when slowing down because they simply don't have the "skill" - such as RPM matching - which you get used to as soon as you start doing it. I never had to "learn" as I was always taught to do that - but uhh, yeah, the "learning process" isn't rocket science.

i heard you save more gas downshifting, because that cuts off the injectors and creates a vaccum so gas is not there to maintain the rpms
downshift using the heel toe. why? cause i autox and open track events. helps out a lot

Isn't that bad for your throw out bearing though? When stopped I am always in neutral, no matter what.

I've never heard of that. Also, I don't hold myself at a stop with the accelerator as some people do. I stay on the brake.

i just leave it in gear with the clutch pushed in and hit the brakes. if im trying to show off tho, i will downshift and motor brake it. lol and just sometimes if i come to a long red light, i will put it in neutral before a complete stop and just leave it in neutral until i pull out.

^That, because that's what I was taught, but I usually go a little under 2k. Should I start down shifting?

keeping the car in gear with your foot on the clutch will wear out your throwout bearing prematurely.

Rev matching is when you estimate the motors rpms at that gear and speed. So say your in 3rd at 2k rpm and you down shift the cars going to buck and the rpms are going to jump to around 4k rpm. So instead of the buck you blip the throttle so its a smooth transition. Hey if your used to heel toeing then why not use it? I try to practice heel toeing as much as I can and when ever I can, you can always get better at it no matter how long you have been driving.

Yeah, thats what I figured it was...Just doesn't make too much sense to me...the "buck" isn't that bad...Also I hear heel-toeing all the time...I've read what it was before too, and I still don't understand it. Isn't it a technique used for drifting?

i just nueatral it from far back and let it coast in nuetral to the light.
i don't really care about other drivers trying to tail gate me or others trying to race me at a red light i just drive.
and i usally have COF blaring windows up* so i can't hear anyricers revving at me LOL

i usually go into neutral and then brake. i guess downshifting to slow down is better. i thought it uses more gas though. i ll try it out. so downshift all the way down to 2 and then just press the clutch in and brake with it in gear to a stop???
