Default 96 LX tORQUE cONVERTER cLUTCH sOLENOID....heLLp!

i HAVE AN aUTOMATIC LX...
I TOOK IT TO THE MECHANIC BECAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT KEPT TURNING ON AFTER I RESET THE COMPUTER 2 TIMES..THE CAR WAS CHECKED BY THE MECHANIC THROUGH THE COMPUTER AND IT REPLIED "TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID CIRCUIT"...
THE CAR MAKES A LOUD NOISE WHEN THE GEARS ARE SHIFTING FROM 2ND GEAR TO 3RD..
THE MECHANIC WAS TALKIN $400 JUST FOR THE CIRCUIT ..STATING THAT YOU CAN ONLY RETRIEVE IT FROM THE DEALER...I HAVE A STRONG FEELING I SHOULD NOT EVEN BOTHER WITH THIS SAME GREASE-BALL...

SO THE QUESTION IS THIS:...>CHANGE THE TRANY OR >GET THAT COMPONENT?

HIT ME UP A-SAP

The solenoid isn't that much from the dealer, it's a lot, but not $400. It's even cheaper if you can find a used one-that's good of course.
Are you only getting one code?

The 2-3 shift seems odd unless that was happening before this code was set off. You may need both solenoids, the shift and the lock up. They are very easy to replace.
I would have to get a definite diagnostic before I spent even dealer price on the solenoid that it will solve the tranny problems. If it's a sure fix, then a solenoid is a lot cheaper and easier than a whole tranny or tranny swap though.

How's the tranny fluid look? Color and level? How old is it? Is it Honda ATF? When was the tranny last serviced?

Yeah ..only getting 1 code ...and the constant delayed shifting, loud noises (while at a certain RPM ), and The RPM Meter moving spontaneously on its own from time to time ((in-between1-2 RPMs while decelerating 2nd gear-1st)) have been an issue for about 2 months...

hey can the "bad" solenoids have a serious effect on the whole trans itself over a period of time? can they cause the trans to become weaker? because lets say i get the solenoids i need , switch them with the fucked up ones, how will i know if the trans will be in the good condition before this whole nightmare?
the Trans fluid is pink, last serviced in June, and the other info i'll get bak 2 u on because i just got the car in July 2007...

Get the number of the code also, it may narrow down the diagnostics.

On my car the tach seems to jump around alittle bit during sownshifts also, like the converter isn't holding the RPMs or something. I haven't looked into that yet, so I'm not sure what would cause it.

Can you expalin the "noises at a certain RPM" alittle more? That may also be a clue.

Hopefully the tranny service didn't involve a full flush, so that would be important info also.

The code is #0038 and this states "VEHICLE MAY EXPERIENCE SHUDDER OR JUDDER WHEN DRIVING AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 20 AND 40 MPH, VIBRATION IS MOST NOTICEABLE WHEN THE TORQUE CONVERTER LOCK-UP CLUTCH IS IN THE PARTIAL LOCK-UP MODE"
Therefore,...The LocK Solenoid is the Focus of the problem ..
What Would Be a Better Decision .. to Change The Whole Trans(because of the potential damage the solenoid might have done to the trans at this point ?), or to Buy and Replace the LocK Solenoid?

My tranny is not throwing codes, but slips from 2-3 (after a flush). Everything else seems fine. When solenoids go bad, do they always throw a code? I would be willing to replace some solenoids before I get it rebuilt. At least I would already have new ones for the rebuild... they would probably get new ones anyway. Any thoughts? Any directions out there on replacing these? I really could use a service manual....

Go for it, they're not hard to replace. Go buy a service manual or do a search here for more info.

I am wondering though... if a solenoid was bad, you think you would notice it during all shifts / all tranny operations. I only have a problem from 2-3 which points to something specific to those gears (not sure what... I don't know how the tranny works).
I can easily see the solenoid pair on the top-front of the tranny. Looks like an easy replacement.
