something broke, please help
to start, i drive a 2000 Si, only mod is a short ram intake. I just replaced the clutch about 10K ago and timing belt about 5k ago. total miles is about 115k.
i was drivng home last night and heard a faint knocking. as i was pulling off the road i heard a bang, and the whole car shook like i ran over something. the knocking is persistent, and loudest when i am increasing or decreasing throttle evenly. i can't hear it when the engine is under load until higher rpm's. i used a screwdriver to listen and it seemed that the noise was loudest above the piston closest to the trans (#4 right?). I took off the valve cover and everything in the valvetrain appears to be fine.
so any ideas what broke? maybe a spun bearing? any ideas on how to narrow this down some more without tearing the whole thing apart? Thanks in advance.

it could be a rod knock and a spun bearing, in either case if that's the problem you're lookin at purchasing a new motor unless you have the cash to fix it - you happen to over rev the hell out of the motor on accident?? lets say, did you accidentally down shift instead of up shift?
not last night, but i can't say i've never done that. but only to the rev limiter, never over that. last night was totally normal sane driving. i would think fixing it myself would be cheaper than buying a new one, maybe b18 block while i'm at it?
believe me - it will take some real expert work to fix your crank if that is indeed the problem..it will be ALOT cheaper and less time consuming to swap in a new motor. and yea, if you have the means to swap in a B18 id go for it. but if it is your crank that is effed i wouldnt **** with it.
thanks for the help. i think even if the crank is bad i could replace that and put it back together cheaper than a new motor. maybe not easier or quicker, but cheaper. also, if i rebuild it myself, i have the option of upgrading parts as i go. maybe high comp pistons, etc. either way, i guess i'm gonna have to tear into it to see what''s wrong.
if it's a bearing how long can i go? i drove my truck to work today, but i built it for rock crawling and it sux to drive on streets, so if i can drive the civic without making it much worse i will.

he couldn't have said it better. DO NOT start it or drive it until its fixed.

Agree. If the problem is only in the block and you run it you could risk screwing your head up too.

super, thanks guys. i will post up after i figure out what's up. my mechanic buddy is coming over tonight, hopefully he can tell what broke by listening to it or we can start tearing it apart and see. good thing i cleaned out the garage this weekend.
good stuff and good luck - when your buddy comes over to listen to the car, if i remember correctly..i was only able to really hear it on my car once the car was warmed up. but seriously hope that he can tell with running the car as little as possible.
bottom end knock can almost never be mistaken for something else, i heard a lady start her car the radioshack here, then she got a wierd look on her face, (i was gettin out of my car she was in the spce infront of me) i told her to shut it off and get it towed to the shop, for a new engine. i go inside radio shack and play with the toys for a while before i buy a charger for my phone, come outside and the cars running, her husbands there with the hood open poking stuff with his finger like hes gunna fix it by intimidation... i stand around for a min or so and hear a small loud "eech" and then quiet... he tells his wife to try start it back up, so i told him not to worry about it, its siezed and his wife should have called the tow truck when i told her to, so he gets an attitude and gets it hte drivers seat, then i hear click, and just had to congratulate him on throwin the main....
well, spun a rod bearing. anyone got a b16a2 for sale? looking at rebuilds now, anyone know of a good place to buy a long block? what about flea-bay? there are some JDM motors out there now, a place in KS, anyone know about them? here is a link to the auction.

thanks
sent them an email from their site, we'll see what they say. i called a place in casper wy that a friend told me about, they will sell me a rebuilt long block for $2250, but they don't have any cores so i would have to take my engine up there and then wait till they rebuilt it, 7-10 days they said. then i'd have a 3 year 75k warranty, which would be worth the extra cost over the ebay motor, in my opinon
$1000 plus about $200 for shipping. better price than ebay, now i gotta decide if i want a full rebuild or take a chance with a used motor. with a used motor i could then build my old back up, maybe bore it and add some other performance parts as i get money.
quick update, ordered the motor from HMO last friday, should be here next monday. looking to put it in the following weekend. ordered a header just to make me feel better, also ordered NGK plugs and wires. picking up the water pump from honda, timing belt, tensioner, and rotor are coming from napa. this is gonna be fun, especially in the snow. i hope it's sunny for the nest week, but i have this feeling...
