I believe oil grade and oil weight are two different things. If you mean grade, don't go with anything less than SL or SJ.
If you mean weight, I just use 10w-30 all year. The coldest it ever gets here is freezing though, and that's a rare occasion. My car has 123k miles.

Dan,
I did mean to say "weight". I thought with higher temperatures the oil would get a lot thinner and that's why you would need to get a thicker oil.
