I own a 99 Civic EX and im gonna be runnin a ctr climate control with the block off plate. im going to be placing my head unit in the below compartment so im lookin for a single deck head unit system that will allow me to pick up albums & songs off my computer and place them onto some type of external memory for my car.
Ive done some research but i figured there should be someone that has had experience or knows what im talkin about

I have a Pioneer DEH-P6900UB and it came with a USB cable. I bought a USB 8GB hard drive for $40 almost a year ago and just put all my MP3's on that. Way cheaper than having to buy a ipod....but it does accept an ipod as well and controls it from the headunit. I bought my headunit off of amazon for just over $200.

you did exactly what i was looking to do...where does the usb plug into on the head unit...im guessing the front. is it easy access so you can take it on and off to add songs from your computer on whenever you want

It has a USB cable that connects to the back of the unit and you can run it to a hidden spot. In my Tundra, I run it to a hidden compartment in my center console, but you can easily run it to the glove box. That way your USB HD stays out of sight and still easy to access to remove and update with your latest music.

I love it! I have 6 Gb of music on mine now and its still growing. I might have to get a new USB HD soon.

yes sir! When you switch to USB as the source it reads the data and you can display the info on the headunit display. I show the Artist and then song name in two lines on my display. Touching the list button brings up the menu tree and then you can scroll thru all the music on the HD and select which album to display.

It seems to work best when you arrange the music in folders, for me I have artists folders followed by the albums as sub foloders. Works awesome for finding the music.

I'm not sure how many headunits have the tilt face. I know the alpine unit in my civic does, but with alpine headunits you have to buy the USB interface box to accept a USB hard drive, which sucks since the USB interface box retails for $160. Might as well buy a ipod!

For a USB storage device to work with that, you need the Alpine adapter, http://www.crutchfield.com/App...A620M

I have this headunit..its cheap and never heard of the brand before but it seems pretty good. I haven't used it for longer then a week tho..and I have't had more then 20 songs on my usb drive..but I will let you know when I buy a SD card and fill it up with music how easy it is to search through the music. Thats my biggest concern. I can't complain because I got it for free though

My old Alpine 9830 has the motorized face that will tilt like you want but it doesn't have a usb port. I don't know why Alpine quit making h/u's with a motorized face. I love that about mine and hate the one I have in the Honda where you have to push the face back up. I'd love to get a new Alpine but doubt I will due to them not having the motorized face which after having I've fallen in love with.

Hello,

Thanks for shopping the Crutchfield web site.

In answer to your first question, the Alpine CDA-7998 offers selectable faceplate angles. In addition to the standard faceplate position, there are two preset faceplate tilted angels to choose from.

With regards to the Alpine KCA-620M USB interface, unfortunately, it is not compatible with the CDA-7998 head unit. The KCA-620M is only compatible with 2004 and newer Alpine Ai-Net head units, and the CDA-7998 was released in 2002. I wish I had better news for you there.

I hope that helps. Please let us know if you need anything else.

Thanks again for your e-mail.

Happy Holidays!

I have the 9886 and i use it with two different USB drive. One is 8 gb mini harddrive and the other is some cheap walmart 2gb drive. works fine. Although, you may want to get a usb extender so that you can place the connection in the glove comparment.

Hi lads,

I recently purchased the Alpine CDA-9886 and a Maxtor Onetouch 4 Mini 120gb 2.5" external drive, yet all i keep getting when plugging into the unit is "Device Error".

So I tried an 8gb USB flash drive, and that worked perfectly, so I knew it wasn't the HU.

I tried formatting the Maxtor to FAT32 from NTFS, and also tried changing the partition size to 8gb, yet nothing seemed to work.

Has anyone else had any problems connecting a USB powered 2.5" hdd to the CDA-9886?

Cheers,
