Engine won't start on own!

Engine won't start on own!
Engine was installed over thanksgiving.If i turn the key the engine will start but immediately stalls.If i hold the gas in a tiny bit when i start it , and idle it at a grand for a second or two then let off the gas....It will now hold an idle fine."around 750-800 rpms"Any suggestions?
