Default cold start woes...

its been getting real cold around here (mornings are like 20 degrees) and now the car wont start.... i'm not sure where to start, the starter turns over strong, battery is new, so thats not an issue...

only thing i have is when it was about 40 degrees the car kicked over with no problem.. any idea? when its cold it will crank and crank.. but wont kick over

cap/rotor/wires are newer

any suggestions would be helpful.. getting a ride everywhere sucks.

ps: would fitv or iacv have anything to do with problems starting? thanks in advance

I have a very similar problem. When it gets below 40 degrees my car wont start unless I give it gas. It wont crank over with out giving it gas. But if I hold it at 2000 rpms for a minute or two it will stay on. It sounds like the motor is being choked without giving it gas.

So suggestions for me are to check the <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by bluedlude &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">

But IDK where that is at?

possible bad coolant temp sensor? when i had cold start issues last year, it was because i'd completely broken the plastic connector on the sensor itself, so the ecu wasn't seeing a sensor at all. had very hard cold starts as a result.

is the coolant temp sensor on the thermostat housing? i'll check into that.. i have noticed that the past year my coolant temp gauge never reaches 2 bars(half way) it always reads 1/4 no matter how long i let it idle

have you tried resetting the ecu? I used to have the same problem with an old accord of mine when it got cold, and I would just reset the ecu and it would crank and run fine after that.

You need to find out why the car isn't starting. Is it spark or fuel. Probably spark, my guess. Test your ignition coil, see if the resistances are proper. Do a cold test on coil, because I found my coil tested within specs when it was warm(car was starting fine), but when cold, its resistances where WAAAAAAAAAY off (@-10 degrees Celsius and would stall out 2 or 3 times if it would even start).

Also, make sure the connector of the coil (4 Pin) has all the Pins pinching tightly on the slotted contact points. Even pinch them closed with needle nose pliers to make sure they bite down on the contact. Make sure the wire going to the secondary coil is making good connection. (this applies if your H23 external coil).

I have a 2 year old piece of shiet battery, and a new coil. Car fires up immediately, first or second crank every morning now.

(I'm sure you already know but) You can test for spark by having a buddy crank it for you while you hold your spark wire boot near a part of your block (that's grounded) using insulated needle nose pliers or equivelent ). If a bolt of lightning comes than your problem might be fuel than. Main relay perhaps?

Intermittent problems are a b*tch.

So you didn't really do anything to it the night before? even remove/reconnect connectors or anything?
