So I decided to play with my cam gears today.

My car is a 00 Type-R with the following mods.
AEM CAI w/ bypass valve
DC JDM 4-1 Header
Test pipe
Thermal exhaust
AEM cam gears
V-AFC
Inside the motor:
Eagle crank stock stroke
Eagle rods
SRP pistons .020 over 11.7:1
ARP rod bolts
Skunk2 vlave springs and retainers
stock cams
Manley valves
The car pulled pretty nice with the old cam gear settings -1 int, -1 exh but the car would not break the tires free in first when I hit it. So I decided to play with the cam gears some. I now have them set at +3 int, 0 exh. I of course adjusted the timing. I then took it for a spin and wow. I spun first, shifted to second and spun almost all the way through second and chirped third.
My car feels different now and seems to have more tq. I love stompping the throttle at 6k and hearing the tires all of the sudden light up!!

I was tuned when I had them set at -1 and -1 . I went to the dyno when the motor was burning oil and I base lined at 166hp and 117tq. I did al kinds of adjustment then but -1, -1 worked the best. All other setting lost horsepower through the whole power band.
I also forgot to mention I have a 255 walbro fuel pump and FPR.

My stock B18C made more power than that with Spoon drop-in filter, RCrew Racing header and RCrew Racing 3" exhaust, how are you only making 166/117?

Just the base timming? Becuase if so that doesn't count. What are your tunning with? all I see is a vafc which offers no ignition retard or advance feature.

When I dynoed 166hp and 117tq my motor was burning oil real bad. I adjusted the cam gears to -1 in and -1 exh and made 170hp @ 8100 and 119tq.
The original reason I dynoed it was because i thought I was runnig lean. At the time the only tuning items I had was a FPR, Vafc, and cam gears. I know the vafc is not the best but it cost me next to nothing from a friend.
With my new set up im hoping to break 180 hp and get the tq up near 130.
Thanks.

Well I know I dont have the perfect R but I love her anyways. Im not proud of the numbers i got before because i dynoed it with what it came with when i bought it. So based on what she did before, Im only hoping for 180 now. The guys at the dyno I took it to didnt know how to make power in hondas so I had to do my own tuning. I atleast pulled 4 hp and 2 tq out of her LOL.
This time Darren at Titan Motorsports is going to help me tune my car whern I get a tunable ecu and money for dyno time. Hes really good friends with my sister so maybe he will cut me a deal.

Wait so you are messing with the cam gears and your not on a dyno.... Very few tuners will even mess with cam gears any more, it takes to much time to and its not really worth it. Leave it like it was.
well... adjustable cam gears are not really intended for the purpose of hap-hazardly tweaking in a quest for a few more HP.
they are made for the purpose of degreeing your cams if you have a built engine that has had the head milled or block decked. when you make these types of changes to an engine, the geometry changes and so the cams might not be degreed properly for your new engine anymore. the adjustable cam gears are used to compensate for the changes you make in your engine. once you have clayed and degreed your engine, you know what type of a range you have to work with IF you want to tweak the cams on the dyno.

could just be a low reading dyno? sounds pretty powerfull from your discussion
.. mines goin to tune tomorrow morning with I/H/E vafc2 with adj cam gears so see how it goes.. hoping for some power like redline32

Yeah and you were on a dyno, and you were the tuner I take it. Now a days people don't want to pay the extra hour or so it takes to mess with the cam gears.

I agree with that statement, and on a stock motor with bolt-ons it really isn't worth it..But change cams, headwork etc. it can be a suprise..Hell the only reason I even bothered to try is went through buying them and install, figured what the heck, got good useable power from them..pain in the **** resetting the timing after every intake adj..

Well like I said mine are still at 0 and 0. Mite play with them some this weekend but no more than 1-2 degrees cam timing. I get my wide band tomorrow from my sister. i cant wait to see how Im really running. When I go to the dyno in the next month or so I will post my sheet with before and after tuning numbers. I will also post up my adjustments I made and what they did. Wish me luck.
Thanks for not giving ******* answers.

We need to dyno both of our cars and tune them. Both have come a long and still have potental. It just takes a little time to sort everything out.

OK!!!
So went for my much anticipated tune this morning to see IF adjustable cam gears would help my setup!!
Car is running
Stock B18CR
4>1 stainless PRO1 headers
3" intake with pod
2.5" Trust Power Extreme 2 stainless full exhaust with onni test pipe
Adj Cam Gears
APEXi VAFC2
now this is the second dyno iv been on, apparently its a heart breaker in terms of low power readings as alot of pro imports tune their drag cars there an have mentioned this..
After about hour an half
Max power was 130kw atw ~170hp atw (133kw on dynapack last time same tune)
but what was in the middle mattered!! the adj cam gears gave me 7kw atw ~10hp more through the rev range taking it up from 93kw to 101kw through most of the mid section of the graph on stock typer cams
didnt get any more info yet as they ran out of printer paper and couldnt print the graph
but might try an get him to send it out to me in the post.
its definately alot better.. can pass cars in 5th gear on low cam ahha
made a huge difference, pulls alot better.. really over the moon!!
Time to take it to "Tricky Tune Dyno" for a high reading mwaha
