96 Civic Sedan


On cold mornings my hand brake will freeze in the 'on' position.... from what I can tell there’s water in the line and I'll need a new one.

How much work is involved in changing both lines?

I went to order them, and apparently there are different lines for Japan and non-Japan built cars... How can I tell the difference?

from what i know, the lines are just metal cables... there shouldn't be any fluid in them. it can be a pain to change, but it usually involves:

removing center console (plastic around the shifter/e-brake)
there are (i think) two bolts holding the ends of the lines.

pop out the rubber grommets holding the lines to the chassis.

follow the lines the the rear brakes and unbolt the braces holding the lines to the chassis along the way.

i forget how they hook up the brake assembly themselves. it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

install the new lines. (you may need to drop the exhaust to pop the grommets back in). WD-40 is your friend.

 

its nothing to do with your cables. whats happening is there is some water in your drum, and at night, the water freezes and locks the break pad on. just dont use your parking break overnight. thats about the only way you will stop it from happening.

 

The parking brake cable goes to the drums through a metal sleeve.... this is where the water accumulates.... so I'm told

 

it's possible that water is freezing inside your ebrake cable, but more likely is what frickr said... it's most likely water in your brake drum.

i'm so used to having 4 wheel disc brakes, that i forgot about brake drums.

 

mine does the same thing on the rear right side. Now for some reason i have no brake on that side at all lol.
