Default question about using custom K&N air filter/custom turbo intake tubing -- power losses/gains?

No luck in forced induction, so I'm trying here:

I'm going to be using a garrett t3/t4 .57 trim, .63 A/R on my stock d16y8, I have 95% of my parts to be able to turbo my car, I just have one question(My WHP/WTQ goals are btw: 215/170-ish tuned on crome.):

How much, if any, HP/TQ power losses would one expect to lose from directly connecting a small cone shape K&N filter directly to the turbo inlet port? What about if I attached a custom intake arm (aluminum) on the turbo inlet and then had the filter on that? Would the heat soak from the turbo/manifold/motor affect things greatly enough to warrant adding intake tubing?

The gains/losses would be minimal if it was attached right to the filter or if there was a 2 ft. pipe there.

I've seen it both ways...I've also seen it with no filter altogether.

I prefer just putting a pipe there because it moves the filter away from the engine, put it by the charge pipe, or if you can get a lil bend it in slide right under it.

The difference won't mean much though. You can still reach your goal.

Thanks for the tip.

Interested if anybody has any dyno charts or something to prove how much whp would be lost by having the filter directly on the turbo inlet port?

I tried both ways on my T3/T4 (b18b) and i noticed no difference. I have the filter on the turbo outlet because i live were it rains quite a bit so i didnt want to put it any lower than i had to due to water issues but honestly its whatever you prefer. Having the filter being close to the motor didnt effect the filter but if you put it lower you would be getting a little bit cooler air. so its up to you man
