I'm getting mixed reports - so i wanted to start a thread with this topic and get things on the table.

I have a 99 LS engine ... recently broke the differential on an LS tranny and I'm thinking of putting a Type R tranny on there.

Now I know the gear ratios are different than the LS tranny, but with a little help i would try to gauge by how much this is different. Anyone with experience on either one please let me know.

Is it worth considering opening up a brand new Type R tranny and include the final gear from the LS tranny - to get the best of both worlds - quick start and milleeage on the highway with lower engine revs, or not.

Is the type R gear ratio different enough to want to consider just getting a solid diff in the LS and run it like that?

The difference between a Type R tranny and a LS is like night and day. Please dont get a Type R tranny and put an LS final into it. Just take the ITR tranny as it is.

I think it may be too big of a jump from 4th to 5th. You may have to push 4th every time to be able to maintain speed in 5th.

Use the calculator I linked you to, to find out

Use the calculators to see what your frankenstien tranny will end up doing. Look at where you end up in the next gear after shifting at redline.

... still no valid reasoning for not changing the final drive in the Type R with an LS one.

I doubt you would have to redline it in 4th to get the 5th to work

Tried to use the calculator, but I think it's fucked up.

For the LS final
6800...4th gear....101

101......5th gear.... between 5000 - 5500

For the Type R final
6800....4th gear...97

97.....5th gear.....between 5000 - 5500

If you want the ITR transmission for performance, you are essentially hindering that by swapping an LS final drive and wasting money on an ITR transmission. Why not just get a GSR transmission and swap an ITR LSD? The 5th gear RPM would be lower than the ITR with LS FD without sacrificing 1st gear acceleration.

Well - I got the Type R transmission in place.

A little background information and specs:

LS Block/Type R tranny/T3/T4 turbo/ODB1 (downgrade)/eManage/auto-manual conversion

The readouts are as follows - the speed is OFF by 5 miles on the high side - i know this because i compared speeds with other vehicles on the road going the same speed as me.

3100 rpm - 60 mph - 5 = 55 mph
3400 rpm - 65 mph - 5 = 60 mph
3700 rpm - 70 mph - 5 = 65 mph
3900 rpm - 75 mph - 5 = 70 mph
4100 rpm - 80 mph - 5 = 75 mph

these ARE the ACTUAL numbers - drove the car in this morning. No guessing.

I'll keep posting as i get this tuned more and get the new tranny settled over several hundred miles.

I may post mpg also if anyone is interested.

I remember when i had this on automatic - i was at 80mph at 3000 - 3050 RPM.

I mean ... now it's off by ... 1500 almost.

Your tires could have something to do with the speed being off.

Normally, it will not always be off by the same amount.

Ex: 40 is really 45
50 is really 57

stock type R specs
80 mph is about 4200
70 mph is about 3800
60 mph is about 3100

The wheels/tires are indeed different - but check this out:

195-55-15 vs 205-45-16

the speedo should be off by .5mph - not 5MPH

That's not to say - probably at all.

Plus - the tranny speed sensor is identical for both auto/manual.

Did you ever change the gauges?

Maybe try and change the speed sensor.

No gauge replacement done.

I inquired about the speed sensor - as these are not necessarily cheap ... they are identical. No need to change those ...

Just woundering if they can ever go bad like what has happend to you. Maybe look in some junk yards for one.

Other than that, I've got no clue what could be causing it
