socal motorcycle license
if you were to take the MSF class you get a paper that waves the riding portion at the DMV.
My question is: Can I skip getting a permit and just go to the class and then get my license?

awesome, so that should mean I can skip the permit completely? That would be ideal(i need to ride at night)

Is that a recent development? When I took it a few years ago, there was no pre-req for having a motorcycle permit. Unless that is a NY thing.

I think it must be. When I took the MSF, I didn't have a permit, once I passed the MSF course I went to the DMV and got my license. Never got a permit.

Oh, not sure maybe just a NY thing then...yeah they wouldn't let anyone into the course without a permit...1st day was all paperwork and photo copying are permits, etc.
Permit test for motorcycle was pretty much same exact as written permit test for car though so no biggie...mainly asking questions about alcohol and street signs.

No permit require in GA either. We took the permit test in class.

You do not have to pass the written test in order to take the MSF course; however, you will have to pass the written test in order to get your license. The MSF completion certificate waives the skills test, and only the skills test. I recommend that you take the MSF course, then upon receipt of your certificate go to the DMV and pass the written test. After passing the written test, hand them your certificate and get your license.

thats the best thing to do.. also, do your self a favor, go to the DMV and get that free M1 handbook.
i went to the DMV for my permit before i went to the MSF and failed the written twice. then i went home, and read the entire book, and passed.
however, if i would of done the MSF 1st, im sure i would of never had a issue with the written permit test in the 1st place. the course is very informative.. well worth the money.. and not to mention the fact i would never pass the DMV test on my CBR.

I took the MSF then went to take the written test. Passed it and a day later, my certificate came for my license. Went back and got it.. MSF is well worth it.
My Dad on the other hand, who used to ride before I was born, had to re-take the written test because the DMV showed no record of him having an M class license prior, even though he did. So, he had to take the riding portion of it. Rented some POS Buell from the Harley Davidson dealership off the 10 in Westco and passed. That thing is smaller than a Korean's man's *****.

you dont need a permit to take the msf course
you can get a permit before hand, take the course, then get your license, or you can just take the msf course then go get your license. Of course youre going to have to take the written test at the dmv either way so you might as well save a trip and go to the dmv after the msf course
