Axles for 200-250 HP - 5-7 psi turbo B18B w Type R tranny
hey
Anyone have any experience with axles on a turbo B18B engine?
I'm planning on putting a type R transmission in and i'm looking at not having to replace the axles very often (if not at all).
I guess i'm looking for a decent solution except the OEMs which i'm told will give way given the 200HP range.
I'm not looking at spending too much on these, but give me a few ideas and i'll look into those.
Thanks

Preload and stock axles wont have a problem. I've run my GSR on slicks w/ the stock axles without a problem...numbers in sig
Also, in reference to whomever told you it was possible to break axles ~200whp...that is true i'm sure, but you could break axles with the stock amount of power if you tried...
I run Autozone lifetime replacement axles in my GSR

go to a NAPA and buy the axles for your car there. they have a lifetime gaurentee and you can get both of them for $90. i used them on my last integra and it made 350whp. and my good friend had a fully builtls vtec turbo makin low 500 and used them all day long at the track and never had one problem

I Definately agree with the Autozone and Napa lifetime warranty axles! I have used them for over 10 years, on all of my integs and I dont have to replace them very often even though I beat on them as much as I possibly can. About the type-r tranny on a boosting LS.............bad idea! the short gear ratio sucks for boosted applications, its much better for All motor or Nitrous apps. The long gear ratio of the LS tranny is soooooo much better with turbo! If you want the type-r trans for the LSD just buy a quaife LSD and have a trans shop install it, it will cost just about the same and you will be so much happier I guarantee it.

the way u want a transmission and engine to work is... u want to have the right sized gears so that ur engine stays longer where it makes the most power....
with that said.. its easy to understand why the type r tranny is not good for the ls engine... besides the fact that the rod ratio is aweful for the ls and the fact that the engine is not designed to perform above 7k rpms.
even without the turbo an ls engine will rip through a type r tranny real quick... ull be in 5th gear before u know it and with a turbo... im suprised u get any traction...
best option is the gsr tranny with lsd for a turbo stock b18b b20b
I had a b20b turbo making just over 300whp and i had stock axles... axles held up just fine...

Yhis is all true - Except - The GSR tranny! The LS tranny with lsd is the best bet, it has the longest gears of all of the b-series trannys! Gsr is an awesome all motor tranny just a bit longer than the type-r.

The OP will be just fine with 200-250 WHP and the ITR transmission. In fact, he'll be better than the same car with an LSD LS tranmission.

OP, wheel hop and hard launches will kill your axles and possibly the LSD. If you avoid that, the stock axles should be fine.

serious man ppl dont no what they are talking about a type r tranny is better even for boost, my friend had a ls turbo mild build, made 300hp and first he ran with ls trans=13.2, then got a lsd type r trans, and was running low 12's, with slicks as well, but im tired of hearing ppl say that ls tranny is better for boost but for all motor type r is, it doesnt matter type r is eevn better for boost, if you think otherwise u have no clue
,ive seen this and have experienced with this, i didnt "hear" this off the net

if you get rid of wheel hop and get the traction down a gsr or type r tranny will be fine, and stock axles hold about 300hp if you dont launch like crazy,

I have been BUILDING High performance hondas since 1996. I have never taken any info off of the net and ran along with it just to be on the band wagon. I have done every engine swap imaginable on a honda . I NEVER vouch for hearsay, and I NEVER give advice about something I dont have first hand knowledge of. ANY reputable shop who has any experience with turbo charged Hondas will tell you the LStrans(or longer gear ratios) will without a doubt net the best performance from a turbocharged LS (b18b) engine. And any seasoned performance tech will tell you that a transmission with "longer" gears is the way to go with turbo. There is no doubt that the type-r or gs-r trannys are awesome for just about any honda swap. but when it comes to boost if you have ever had a turbo on YOUR car and not had a friend who(insert B.S. here). You would know for yourself that the laws of engineering will prove to you that longer gears on ANY turbo charged car will work the best.

well my buddy just proved you wrong he shed almost 2 seconds of his 1/4 mile time going with a type r tranny, on his turbo ls, so why is ls better????

you could have designed the car and i would still laugh at you for saying that
any mechanical advantage (shorter gears and final drive) will make you accelerate faster (incase you didnt know, acceleration means going faster) as long as the traction is there
btw, stock axles are known to last up to alot of abuse as long as you preload when launching

The tranny choice depends a lot on the power output also. One of the guys at work had to swap from a GSR tranny to a LS tranny on his 500whp turbo LS/VTEC(with 100shot of nitrous). Yes, the gearing is longer and slower but on such a high output car it was neccessary just because once the turbo spooled up the gears would go through so fast and everything it wasn't able to make use of staying in the gear longer and using the boost made because he was already shifting. On a mild 300whp build yea, I'd probably say try a GSR tranny, they work great too and that number isn't exactly huge for a turbo car either. Just like when people ask how much psi they run, it all depends on the application and the set-up. As far as the OP's output, the Type-R tranny will probably work fine.
I wouldn't be too worried about the axles. I know a guy that had a 654whp turbo teg that has never broken an axle at the track. He ran a 10.9 at 139, he got no traction(got kicked off the track too for not having the safety euipment, even though he drove it 1 and a half hours to the track on the highway). The first car I mentioned was also running on stock axles and never broke them either.

Preload means to apply torque to the axles more slowly, i.e. riding the clutch at launch. Dumping the clutch will jolt the the drive train.

Statements like this ruin any possible credibility that you could have. As an engineer, I would be customizing my transmission ratios for the power curve of my vehicle and available traction. Saying that an LS transmission is best for ANY turbo charged car is just closed minded.

the great trans fight starts again lol
to the op you wanna go threw the traps in the top of 4th. there are other things you could change like slick size if you are gonna be running them. i have both a ls and a gsr use the gsr trans and look for a ls 5th it works for me anyway good luck
