Troubleshooting a 91 SI that wont crank (did the motor seize?). PLEASE HELP
PROBLEM WAS A PLASTIC GROMMET ON THE CLUTCH PEDAL. $2.78 AT HONDA. THE OLD HAD WORN OUT. LOTS OF THANKS TO YOU GUYS!!!!
A family member is giving me a 91 SI for free so I hope I can make it work.
Its been sitting for about a year. My uncle said he started it once a month or so ago and everything was ok but im starting to think it has seized. Here are the details.
Its a 91 Civic SI 125000 miles - good condition.
I added a brand new battery and starter out of the box - it still wont crank.
Turn the ignition and the motor primes everything sounds ok but the starter doesnt spin (or even make a sound for that matter) - like the starter is not getting power.
Checked the oil, check the wiring and everything looks ok.
Looked at the alarm and wiring - everything looks and works fine.
I checked the fuses, ground, and hear the relays in glove box and under the hood clicking when I turn ignition- still nothing.
Im starting to think the motor seized or its some obscure relay or ignition problem.
Please any input is very much appreciated.
Im going back tomorrow with any advice from you all. Also to remove the starter and see if it spins when its outside of the motor. That would be a sure way to see if the engine has seized or not.

Get a 17mm on a ratchet and spin the motor over. that will tell you if the motor is locked or not. I doubt that it is. after that you can check the wiring for the starter.
ok try the clutch swith on the top of the clutch pedal and take the plug out and jump the connector and see if it will turn over
if the switch is bad it wont let it turn over
try that and see if that helps anything

Short the starter and see if it cranks. I had this trouble on my accord. When I bought it, 2nd day I had it it wouldn't crank. I bought and installed a new battery and starter. It still wouldn't crank by key, only when I shorted it. While I was under the dash testing the ignition switch, I got an all good, except for one pin, the last one. Well I saw some wiring that didn't look stock, and found a hidden switch. Turns out it was some sort of kill switch which the previous owner failed to mention to me. I must have accidentally tripped it. So I yanked that out, and reran the wires the way they should be and WaLa, started right up.
good advice so far. I knew I could count on ht.
few newb questions though.
which way do I spin motor over clockwise or counter?
how do I short the starter? Run a positive cable straight from battery to it?
Jumping the clutch switch I imagine is just bypasssing the switch by attaching the wires around it

1. u can spin the motor either way
2. the starter has a ground and a power get a screwdriver and
touch the 2 together so they will make contact should turn over
3. unglug it and get a piece of wire strip both ends off and stick one wire in one side of the connector and the other in the other side of the same connector that will bypass the switch

It started thanks! I cant start it from the ignition, I have to jump the starter.
Im looking under the dash for cut wires, ignition kills and the clutch pedal switch (which I still havent found unless its waaaay up there - WHERE IS THIS THING?). What about relays? Do you think it could be starter or ignition relays?

Ok im learning more about this clutch safety switch through search. I havent decided to keep it and fix it by adjusting or just bypass it. Pictures from a member for reference. The bottom smaller picture is mine.

Here is something else to look at. Look at the carpet just under the pedals. Is there what looks like blue crayon pieces? If so, that is the problem. The clutch switch is pressed by this piece of plastic, without the plastic in place the switch end goes into the pedal and you get no starter action.
Looking at your picture, it looks like you do not have the plastic piece. Look up at the top of the pedal, just like your camera angle and push the pedal in. You should see blue plastic, not a hole in the pedal. If this is the problem, you can bypass the switch or get a new plastic piece ($6 or so from Honda).

Yup it was the plastic piece that had crumbled. I replaced it in 20 seconds.
