Default VTEC problems

I am having with my VTEC. It sometimes kicks in and other times it doesnt. I check my oil regularly and it isnt low. I have a VTEC controller and sometimes when the VTEC doesnt kick in the controller will say that it should have kicked in and others it says VTEC is off. Any suggestions on what it could be?? Thanks in advance!!

take out the solenoid, there will be a screen on the inside, much like that of the IACV.. spray some carb cleaner and de-clogg it
