would you buy a helmet off ebay?
Try searching for some used shoei rf-800 or 900 they are good helmets and pretty cheap most that is on ebay appears to be in good shape. That's what i would do if i was on a tight budget.
Only from sellers with tons of feedback. I bought a used helmet off eBay once from a guy with 100% feedback (120+ positives). Almost got burned on that one, when he sent me a different helmet and lied about it.
Pony up the cash for a helmet from a reputable seller. Your head has some value to it, no?

What the hell do you mean? It doesn't matter where you buy it's the brand that matters. And ebay has the best prices for new helmets online. In stores may have better deals.

Here's a weird thing. I had an Arai RX-7RR Edwards in red that I bought before I got my bike from Ebay. I bought a blue bike and used it just for a few months. Nice helmet. Relatively quiet, tight tolerances, etc. Then I decided to get a blue one. Same RX-7RR Edwards but in blue. This one was helluva lot noisier and tolerances with the visor lock action and the chin spoiler seemed to be not so good. And part of the black plastic molding under the chin came off. I wanna say the blue one is a fake but it's too damn similar to the red even side by side that it can't be. I'm 100% sure that it's real. My point is that even original products can vary tremendously.

+1, also the older helmets are often sold. As in, left over stock from 2005 and 2006, which are bought at closeout prices, are then sold on ebay for a hefty profit.

safety wise, all helmets are pretty equal, its mostly about fitment, comfort, airflow, features... i got a HJC helmet from http://www.newenough.com for like 70 bucks, which is pretty cheap, and it fits and feels so much better, and is alot quieter than a VOX helmet i got off ebay (which i do not recomend)
i say check newenough, maybe their closeout section will have a deal.

i have. came brand new, in box and everything. although obviously before you buy it research the seller first to make sure you're not get screwed. but most of the dealers on their are legit
Wow, quite a difference of opinion, some good, some totally rediculous IMHO and I didn't even read them all.
YOU are right ... you only get one melon.
1st nitwit - any helmet w/DOT sticker is ok --- BS most sellers of novelty helmets (read ... cheap, NON DOT) will hand you a "DOT" sticker with your purchase ... doesn't make it a DOT approved helmet.
Shoei RF900 and LOWER (800, 700, 200) are ALL old helmets and, if you believe the manufacturers, NG because they tell you the life of a helmet is 3 - 5 years -- think they have an agenda?
Buy only from ebayers with tons of feedback then proceeds to tell you he almost got burned from a 100%er
Then you have the guy who says the only thing that matters is the brand -- I say if he had 1/2 a brain he'd be a 1/2 wit.
You get my drift, now here's my $.02 for those I insulted to pick apart.
Most important is the integrity of the helmet. Even new helmets can get dropped before they are purchased. Those nasty manufacturers tell you if any helmet is dropped from a height of 3' or more, it's worthless. Second most important is the fit, if it's not sized properly it's not going to perform as designed. Since sizes between are guaranteed to be NOT uniform (one's large could be anothers medium or XL), therefore it is 100% luck if you get the right size (unless you go to a store, get it fitted properly, then walk out and buy it on-line which is sure to win you a warm welcome when you go back to that store). Third factor is your budget.
Many brick and mortor stores will match on-line prices if they can and are smart.
My advice is find a dealer that will work with you and match price if you find it on line.
Do you believe I'm a non-helmet wearing rider?
Good luck

helmet buys on ebay: caveat emptor.
even dropping a lid from saddle height may be enough to damage the helmet enough to keep it from saving your brain. who knows where these ebay lids come from?
also, getting a 3-5-7 year old helmet is a bad idea. whether shoei and arai are lying or not, i do think that foam degrades and is less protective than a new lid.
that said, i've bought 2 used helmets before, but only locally so i could give it a good look-see.
