Default H22A grooved crankshaft?

First off, I'm the middle man... So don't yell at me if I get something wrong.

My friend's engine is being built by a very reputable Honda engine builder/tuner in Houston TX... He says that the crankshaft that was in my friends H22A (50mm) has grooves in the rear main seal 'journal' or the rear snout. I've always heard of rear main seal issues with these motors, but it looks to me like those grooves are machined; and I don't see how a rear main seal could groove the crankshaft..

Every picture I've seen of an H22 crank has those grooves. My friend said that his tuner said there shouldn't be any grooves.. Whats going on? Has anyone seen a NEW H22 crank?

Jason

I guess the spring on the inside lip of the seal could cause a groove to form over time....

Pics ftw

I've seen two brand new H22 crankshafts, but I never paid enough attention to see if this "groove" was present. If I get a chance, I'll pull the bag off of my current build as see if it has one (it has a new crank on it).

As for the groove that you might be seeing, I've seen it on at least 2 H22 rebuilds. I've never really been able to feel anything with my finger. It just looks like the coating (nitride perhaps) has been worn off by the seal. I never had a problem with the rear main leaking on those engines.

The grooves are worn in. This is caused by contact of the seal, dirt debris accumulating at that point, and the rotation of the crankshaft. Usually changing the position of the seal is a simple solution.

Exactly. And I changed the position of the seal in my build
