Well, an STi uses premium gas, gets much shittier fuel economy, and will probably cost almost twice as much to insure on a young driver.

What year is it? that's important.

But you do gain a lot of power and more fun, but they're a bit dated, especially in the interior department.

Honda Civic Ex

Pros:
Great gas mileage 36 hwy 25 city mpg
Quiet ride (compared to an sti)
Takes a beating
Quality interior materials/layout
Amazing value for the price
Honda reliability
Better looks (IMO)
Very affordable
Fun top end (assuming you have a newer ex with an r18
Okay potential for power
Cheap to insure
Pretty smooth ride

Cons:
Torque-less wonder when stock
FWD (vs the sti's awd)
Will blend into the crowd (if getting noticed matters to you)

Subaru Impreza WRX STi

Pros:
Ridiculous power and torque
Pretty balanced power band
AWD
You get noticed (if thats what you go for)
6 speed
Great Audio system
Subarus are pretty reliable too

Cons:
God awfully ugly (IMO)
Terrible gas mileage (vs the civic's)
Loud as hell
Cop magnet
Ugly (again)
Not as much top end as I expected
Not sure how much insurance is, but i assume its more than on a civic ex
Painful ride

Hope that helps you a little bit. Both are great cars for what they are. If you are looking for pretty much an all out street legal race car, get the STi. Otherwise, stick with your ex. If you are looking for something in the middle (performance and price- wise), then take a look at an si.

I friend of mine, who has an impressively tuned Legacy and is an AVID Subaru lover, actually talked me out of both the Sti AND the WRX and suggested that i (a financially "iffy" kid straight outta college) would be better off in an Si. The deciding factor(s)?? gas milege, insurance costs, expensive to replace parts on the Sti, and a used Sti (all i can afford) would most likely be ragged out .

The Si is a happy medium. I pat myself on the back for choosing my 08 everytime my *** hits the driver's seat.

yea...i test drove both. and while i am an admitted honda fan, i gave serious consideration to the sti. but my reasons for picking the si were very similar to yours. hopefully i get mine tomorrow. it was in the state on friday, but apparently it takes a truck 5 days to make a 4 hour drive.

If you go STI. expect a significate increase in your insurance. Need to use higher grade fuel and will get worse gas milage. Repair cost will be more expensive and repairs more frequently.

This is all because the STI is a performance car and the EX is not. Would be a lot more fun to drive, but much more expensive.

Just because you "can" get it, does not mean you "should" get it. On the same note, if you can afford it and are mature enough to not drive it like an idiot, go for it.

If anyone here is like me, an STI is a dream car. The fact that I own an Si at 24 is cool with me. As soon as I make the big bucks I'll rock an STI.

A civic is great on gas, and we're comin up on winter and higher gas prices all around in the next few years. Someone already posted it but an STI takes premium gas, that would deter me.

Go drive an Si and see how much you like, it may be enough to hold you over...

in San Diego, you're more likely to get pulled over in an sti just for the heck of it versus your ex...

thanks to most of all those san diego tea cafe freaks with the sti's n lancers drag ricing it out on the local streets, the cops prefer to pull them over
