winter tires sizes
I just purchased a 2002 Honda Civic. The dealer has told me that I can use the 185/60/14 snow tires I ran on my previous VW Jetta, But the local tire dealer refuses to put them on, stating he will not put them on the car as the specs call for a 70 series tire, not the 60 series the VW ran. I hate the idea of buying 4 new tires if it is not necessary, but I also am not willing to compromise the car for the sake of the tires. Any advise,
Thanks, Bill

The dealer who told you to use 185/60-14 tires is wrong. The tire dealer is right, assuming he's referring specifically to the 185/70-14 size.
What you need is tires whose outer diameter is equal to your stock tire size, and for winter tires, you're usually better off using the stock treadwidth too. 185/60-14 is MUCH too small for a 2002 Civic; that's the size for older (pre-'96) Civics, and is over 6 percent smaller in diameter (almost an inch and a half) compared to your stock 185/70-14 size. Not only are they going to throw off your speedometer and odometer, but they are going to lower your car's ride height, which is NOT what you want to do for winter driving. Sell those small tires and get a set of winter tires in 185/70-14 for your car. The Bridgestone Blizzak WS-60 ($71/tire at the Tire Rack), Michelin X-Ice ($73), and Dunlop Graspic DS-2 ($58) are available in that size. You can see a side-by-side comparison test of these three winter tires here.
