How do I get the check engine light to turn off? I know I should bring it in to get checked out but does anyone have any idea as to how I can turn it off on my own?

 

well, remove the (-) negative terminal cable of the battery for 10 mins. But if the problem isnt fixed, then u are gonna throw another DTC

 

I'm gonna "throw another dtc" . . . I don't mean to sound like an idiot, but what does that mean?

 

DTC= Diagnosic Trouble Code (just a technical term) for check engine light

 

Take your car to autozone. I believe they will run it for free to see what code your throwing. You're not doing yourself any favors by hiding the problem, it will still be there. Just fix it then no more light.

 

yea , disconnecting the battery will just turn off the CEL for about 30 miles and will only come on again after that. So its best to just fix the problem.

Going to a place like autozone, pep boys, advance auto, etc. and getting it OBD-II port scanned with an OBD-II scanner is more efficient as it will give you a more accurate read-out, if your car is OBD-II ('96+). If your car is '95 or less, the OBD-I accuracy in that link I gave you is as accurate as you can get.

 

Check it out before resetting it.
