Hi all,

I'm replacing my CV boots. I've got the axles dismantled and cleaned up and I'm putting on the new boots.

Unfortunately I forgot to mark the position of the spider/tripod on the gearbox end of the shaft. I know (now!) - all the guides and manuals tell you to mark it...

Does it really matter what position the spider is at? I figure if it was so important Honda would've put a notch in so you couldn't fit it the wrong way, or at least put the marks on in the factory.

If it really does have to go back in the exact same position, does anyone know what that position is?

Do you have any idea how rare what you're doing is amongst Hondas?

Usually you just buy new axles, even if the boots are torn, you don't know if any dirt jumped up in their and damaged the joint at all.

 

Yeah really man! In the 10 years I've been tuning hondas and acuras, I've never rebuilt any drive axles because its to intricate, your better off buying new ones. That would be like trying to rebuild your distributer or calipers or your steering rack and pinion. your way better off buying OEM parts that people put together in factories every day.

 

Yeah, but... I'm in the UK, recon driveshafts here are £100 each minimum, vs £30 for a full set of boots.

Besides, I think the shafts have got some life yet. Wasn't getting any clicking when the boots split, and the bearings look good as new now they're cleaned up.

Anyway, back to the spider thing... Hmm... Can't find anything else on the net aside from "mark it before disassembly" so looking like I'll just have to stick them back on wherever and hope for the best - can't think why they'd need to be in a specific position...

 

For anyone who faces the same condundrum and stumbles upon this thread...

I put the spider/tripods back on in any old position, and... so far, so good!

Like I said, I'm sure if it was important Honda would've put marks on at the factory, as they do for cam timing etc.

I really can't see how it would be important, but if it wasn't, why would all those how-tos you keep mentioning say to mark its position??

100 POUNDS FOR A DRIVE SHAFT!?

What the ****?? That's ridiculous, they're like 50 pounds / peace here...
