It's not only possible, it's the right way to do it! the motor will hang just fine with the timing side motor mount holding it in place.

so because im lazy.. i dont feel like searching. i assume all i have to do is take all the mounts off except the one driversside and let the engine hang then undo the tranny bolts and slid it off and then put the new one on? seems simple enough.
Yes, what you described is correct. You do need to take the half shafts out, first. Your supposed to put something in to support the engine, but it won't fall out, if you don't.

figured id just put hte car on stands as high as i can get it and use a jack to lower the engine. axles and half shafts arent a problem. iv replaced axles a number of times.. auto tranny have half shafts?

Having a lift is the easiest way but on the ground or with a lift I do it the same way on auto's (since they are so heavy). I get everything off leaving one of the top tranny bolts in til it's ready to drop out and then I lower the car down and set the whole motor and tranny on a pallet til it's almost level again. take out the bolt, pull tranny off and raise car up til it clears tranny. again a lift is easier and can influence the way you have to do it.
Hope this makes sense

im not looking to remove the engine though.. i want to do this without taking the engine out at all.. at least having one mount on.. and i dont have to take the cross memeber out to do this do i?
no you dont have to remove the crossmember, just remove your axles, take off starter, remove bell housing bolts, and clutch inspection plate, and unbolt mounts. I always crawl under there and pull the tranny out, set it on my chest and slide out, also you may need to remove the splash shields. Also you will want to support the engine from underneath, not just letting it hang there by the mount.

IDK for sure if the auto is similar to the manual transmissions in EF's, but if they are...this is a real helpful how-to:

What I said does not require removing engine, I was just trying to explain how I sit it down before dettaching the tranny and pulling it out while still leaving the motor bolted in w/o any support once I raise the car again to clear the tranny. or you can set a jack under the tranny before it's ready to come out and just lower that down once it's dettached

First off you must be thinking this is like a manual which is very light, the autos even in civics are heavy as sh*t and will crush your chest trying your method. two, the crossmember will be all in the way if you don't remove it, the radius rod on the pass side needs to come out anyway so why not just remove the whole thing? you pretty much have to on the autos. and 3rd you DON'T HAVE TO SUPPORT THE MOTOR!
......just bad info all together man

The pass side radius rod is right in the way so that has to come out and if I remember correctly (just did one a month ago) the crossmember pretty much needs to come down since there is so little room with the auto tranny. yes a 5spd would be easier but not by a lot. the crossmember is so quick and easy to remove anyways that it's jut best to get it out of your way instead of fighting even more with it in the way. the front trans mount and pass side rod are coming out anyways so your half way there
