Default Been working on my MIG, Tell me what you think

I have really been working on my welding trying to get it down, is this kinda out it should look? I have not cleaned them up yet and I know they look a little dirty, I only wire wheeled them clean I did not use the Acetone. Just LMK what you guys think and if there is anything I should be doing?

keep practicing.

work on your wire speed and amperage.

Other than the splatter, the bead looks great. How is the penetration?

You could see it coming through a little on the inside. I also checked for leaks using water and there was none.

It's kinda hard to spine the pipe when you are welding.

The top pic looks a little fatter because it is a small pipe going into a big pipe.

One thing I found ... lap joints are much easier than a true butt joint. One thing I have done to practice more (since I'm still learning as well) is to take a 12" section of pipe and cut it into 2" "rings". Then tack up all the rings and in 4 spots. Then doing one ring at a time, play around with wire speed, heat, head spead & head angle. I think my welder is decent, but could have better heat control.

That seems like alot of splatter for a mig. Check your gas output and make sure the metal is clean, clean, clean.

You mean like Argon?
Not sure of the name, I get it at Tractor supply.

Should I turn the gas up? I think it is on like 20 If that means anything.

How far away are you holding the torch from the pipe? That amount of spatter could be because you are too far away.

Assuming both pieces are fairly thin (14-18ga) Anywhere metal is blue it's a bit too hot. Try and set your machine to exactly what it recommends for that thickness, Argon/C02 mix is ideal for what you are welding and will allow better pentatration at lower amperage. What machine do you have? What wire diameter?

That could be, I am still learning and it's a bitch teaching your self with having no idea of welding, only what I have seen on here.

Looks like a good machine, my friend has the same one or close to it. Thing is Hobartgot bought out I do believe, so if anything breaks you may run into problems finding parts. What kinda patern are you using. When I butt weld exhaust pipe I first make sure their are barely any gaps in your work, and then put atleast four tacks all the way around, I personally use a straight pattern and a circle pattern on thin but welds like that, make sure you don't move too slow but at the same time not too fast. Arc Length should be around 1/4-1/2 inch. Also 20 cfm should be sufficient when welding mild steel. I usually keep mine on about 15cfm. When you run out of gas try a 75/25 mix of argon and co2. Also another thing I noticed about the hobart machine, They come from the factory wired up for fluxcore wire, so make sure you have the machine wired in DC+ all it required is opening the panel on the side of the machine and swapping the ground and pos wires. Their should be a diagram of how to wire it up on the inside of the panel if not look in your onwers manual. Good Luck!

Is your machine 110v or 220v?

I think it's 220V

I have the right wire in there. When I first started trying to weld I got a shity Flux welder.

So your saying when my gas runs out I should ask for a 75/25 mix?

The patern I am using is the )/)/)/)/)/)/)/)/)/)/)
That's the best I can do to show you lol
Should I just go in a line and not zig?

if thats you setup above you have blueshield which is 74% argon 24% and 2% co2. its good for welding mild steels. If your going to weld aluminum or stainless you want argon. straight argon comes in a brown bottle.

I weld on stainless all the time and straight argon sucks *****!

You're doing ok man. It might not be pretty but it's mig! You will get some splatter no matter what.

zig zag to spread heat... you dont need to clean it with acetone, just make sure the majority of the paint/dirt/rust etc is cleaned away, and wipe down any oil with a rag, ive never used acetone or wire wheeled before (atleast not before using a mig) i layed a bead with a mig, its just not vital if your using a good machine. My mig machine was well over 4k 2 years ago with just a few options and it burns damn good. Arc welding is the easiest, just tap and burn, burns right though everything haha!

Thank you so much for this!!!
I looked at it last night and it was wired up for flux. Would this mess up my welding at all?

yeah wiring it correctly should make a gigantic difference. There should be some settings on the inside of your welders case. They are usually pretty decent.

report back with pics yo.
