Grassroots Motorsports $2008 Challenge 89 Civic hatch
Well after much deliberation and the lack of update/backdate in SCCA STS i am going to using my newly aquired hatch for the purpose of the $2008 GRM challenge. Point of this thread is for information on building a all around performer for under $2008 and for any help of suggestions i might need.
Brought the car home last night. Bought the car for $190, paid $30 for a head and $20 for a headgasket to get the car running and driving. Car runs good has new tires brakes are fine and suspension is still good. However the idle fluctuates heavily, its burning oil from somewhere most likly the valve seals, and the bearings in the trans are trashed they make a god awful noise. Right now my roomy who is going to help me with the build received a free d16z6 and P28 ecu (gotta add fair market value for those into my budget...what fair market value is i havent a clue yet because the rules dont fully explain that) I am tossing around the ideas of where to go with this right now. I have an extra t25 sitting here that i can build a turbo setup around or i can run the engine NA with bolt ons for the auto-x and then spray the engine for the drag portion of the contest. The guy who placed second last year is running a turbo z6 but had issues with the boost and Vtec so is running with vtec disabled for the time being so i dont know about going the route i need to do more research. But here is how it sits now. (dont worry about the plate its not valid)

ok, so more on the fair market value, hows that work? i would like to know as soon as you find something out. i recently wrecked my car but have a full built well prepped b-swap, full suspension amd all kinds of other goodies i could use. you just gave me the great idea of throwing my build into the challenge as well!!!
in for info!

Easy: What are the parts really worth in today's market? We go through everyone's paperwork, so having something to back up a claim of fair market value is a good thing--could be an ad, eBay auction, etc.
And a Civic can still do well at the Challenge. You'll see this year's coverage in our next issue, but a turbo Coupe did extremely well. Main thing is to have some fun with it.

well there is my answer straight from the horses mouth. And i am good friends with most of the Hong Norr guys, in fact did a couple little things on the third place turbo miata. So would a junkyard price for said item be valid?

Regarding the engine? Probably as a SOHC VTEC engine isn't worth too much. If it was a B16A, then I'd say you'd need a more "real" price. Does that help?

Looks like you have a great start and some ideas about the performance aspects of the competition. You may want to give some consideration to the concours portion of the judging, as that could be your biggest challenge. I've never been a participant, but have followed the GRM challenge since it's inception. You are probably recognizing the true complexity of the decision making associated with doing well. This is where terms like "go with your gut" and "do the best you can with what you have" start to make sense. Based on what I've read in previous GRM challenge articles, cleverness counts!
Best of luck!

i am not as worried as far as concourse goes. my friend works for a body shop so i have full access to their facilities...just gotta figure out what color i want the car. i was thinking of doing it the same as my mazda in the background

Looks like my HC car. That damn ugly *** Cream color. But yours has a grey or black interior. Mine had a brown and red interior. Talk about hideous.
Anyway, as far as the 2008 Challenge, one of the biggest things that messes people up is reliability. If you can run the whole event without problems you will be very close to a winner. Most people slap their cars together and get to the competition and it breaks or there is a problem. Build your setup and test it and drive it before you get there so it is right.

well dammit! i might as well stay out of this one. the "fair market value" on my engine setup, not including parts, is gonna be more than 2008$ alone. oh well, it was a fun idea while it lasted.
alright so let me get this right. its a race that involves cars built with a 2008 budget?
if thats the case will me buying my rex for 200 leave me with 1808 left to spend? if so a b16 setup goes for around 1100 so that leaves me with 700 or so for suspension and brakes.
would this make me eligable to race? cause if so I got a turbo kit that I can slap together and run. is there a site i can go to read more about this setup?

yes you are correct with how you have it figured. but remember even if you already own it you have to put a value to it. You also need to remember about the concourse event

its an awesome event every time. i have read it for the past couple years and it gets better every time. must be all the extra money you can spend with every passing year!!!

There is a B16 on sale here for 500. It was supposedly running when taken out of the car. Does that count
aside from that...
I've been wanting to try it, but hell if i'm going to try and drive from Ca to the east coast in a car done for that budget. I'd probably have to fly back.
Shadow: Good job on getting them deals on GSR's and whatnot. Oh, i believe I also saw some steel mounts for a b-series on here for like under 200.

Well as expected nothing real exciting going on as of yet. I have just been getting the car in order for the big stuff to come.
All the A/C components have been removed, some random wiring that i guess was part of the aircon was pulled out although oddly enough it was just chillen on the firewall, and loose amp wire still connected to 12V power was removed, I got a drivers window regulator so i can now roll down both windows.
Recently struck a deal with my roomates friend to trade my black CRX carpet for him to socket and burn Chrome chips for my P28 ECU which works out in the end because i found a local place i can buy automotive grade carpeting in large sheets from for $30.
I tried repairing the tired D15 but it just doesnt want to cooperate and is burning a ton of oil, the stock trans also needs to come out as it has a bad bearing or something plus i want to put an Si trans in. Guy on the local forum has a Si trans left over after his B swap so i am grabbing that and in talking to him he also had a D16A6 laying around with just the head removed he wants to sell for another $50 extra!!!! so i am jumping all over that. My Dx trans is already sold for $50 so the engine is basically free in the budget and i am begining to wonder should i even bother with the Z6 and just turbo the A6 instead so i will have a little more budget to play with. Since i know i dont have the budget to compete with the heavy hitters in the drag competition i am only looking for a mid 12 sec run which with the weight of the car should be able to be done with a little more than 200whp if i am guessing correctly?? Also got a set of cheap 315CC MK3 supra injectors for cheap off ebay along with the HF manifold turbo adapter plate sitting here next to me.
But i am still on the look out for more parts my main focus right now is find a corbeau drivers seat bracket and slider cheaper than the $89 retail and i am looking for any suspension bits. If anybody can help i much appreciate it. Also if anybody is interested in parts lmk i will see if i have what you are looking for from what i removed.
