It is what it is. 160 HP with high lobes on one cam. It's not as slow as it feels...it's just that with iVTEC the changes to the cam and timing gears are good and relatively undramatic.
Just remember it's 160 HP and was not meant to be a competitor to the Type R.
I don't know if you're interested in considering something this major, but the K20A2 (RSX Type S 2002-2004) motor is relatively cheap, and very easy to install in the EP3. You don't even need to change the transmission if you don't want to do it.
The relatively low compression, 87-octane K20A3 also responds very well to forced induction (either supercharger or turbocharger). You don't have to get radical or expensive with it to be able to easily exceed the stock performance of a Type S or Type R.
If you're not into something that major, then it simply becomes a matter of taste and preference when it comes to intakes and exhausts.

And it's all about the driving. You don't have to be the best driver, just better than the guy you are up against right then.
I have beaten an 02 GT Mustang and 07 RX-8 6 speed to name a couple with my K20A3 and both have significant more power. How fast do you want to go? The A3 will do 140mph and has a decent 0-60 time. I would not call it fast per se, but it is quick.

After driving a stock 89 civic for 2 years my EP3 feel plenty fast for me now!!!
I can take out V6 stangs and other cars with crappy drivers.
I have driven stock EP3s and then mine. I have IHE and I can feel a decent difference.
