ok i have an obd0 b16 in my hatch, i know these motors have nothing for torgue so i wanna upgrade, now im thinking of just getting a gsr short block, i dont know if i want to go ls/cr v-tec because they are not reliable. besides arent the vtec boddem ends better? especially because i like to take it to the high 8k's am i right?
well, your wrong in many ways actually. Lsvtec is reliable if you build it right, and so is crvtec. There are a lot of, "a friend of a friend said his lsvtec blew up." Well to put it lightly, that friend of a friend is probably a moron and didnt build it right.
If you want torque then you will want lsvtec, and if you want more tq then that then crvtec is the way to go. Vtec bottom ends are build differently. Well, not too differently, mainly in the pistons, rods, and crank. But vtec bottom ends are built to handle higher rpms with a shorter stroke. The non vtec bottom ends have longer stroke which yeilds more tq, but they arent build for high rpms, maybe around low to mid 7k rpm range.
However, you can put arp rod bolts in the rods and you wont have any problems going to 8k. My lsvtec made power to exactly 8000 rpm. So thats what I rev it to. If you want to know more about lsvtec there is LOADS of info in the archives. Dozens of builds and how to's. I know for me, if I could do it all over I would go crvtec for more power.

personally i would like cr vtec. my old boss had one in his da and it kicked ***. and its really cheap for the short block. what can i do to be able to SAFELY handle 9 to 10k rpm's on the block, i already have the head built. just wondering if i cshould go as far as crank/rods. i know im going to need arp main bolts and rod bolts, but would it be good to get a girdle? right now that b16 takes 9500 time after time. thats why i was leaning more towards vtec block, the oil gallies are all different in vtec motors. they get more oil then a non vtec
