Default K&N #2427 & ICEBOX

How much did you guys pay for this??? I've called around locally and it costs an arm and a leg...around $90+ for this filter i need for my comptech icebox. I'm considering using the stock ITR filter for my icebox...only $30.99 at my acura parts store...will it flow a lot less....1-2less HP up top? what do you guys think? I'm going from a short ram...which prolly has costed me power. Best time to date is a 14.9@95mph in a b18c5 97 civic ex coupe. I failed to mention the kosei k1 17x 7.5 and bigger brakes prolly don't help much in that cause..nonetheless....short ram is f'in loud...and prolly sucks up my power... I need help on this....so far..I've ordered the ITR intake tube and icebox..now just need the filter....any help would be greatly appreciated...i don't want to use the COMPTECH drop in filter for sure... so it's either K&N E-2427? i believe or itr stock drop in filter.....how much is the 2427...and would there be a power diff between the two....thanks...

I was quoted the same price for that stinkin filter. I thought it was a typo but 95 dollars for a filter is ridiculous. Just use ru2820 and modify it. 35 bucks.

You guys are living in an expensive part of the world. The Comptech filter is $70 and the stock Acura filter is usually around $20.

Just get the Comptech - $70 for 2 whp is a screaming deal in the world of Type-R performance.

If you do a search online, or go to the K&N site and look at their distrubtors you can get the filter for $65 or so.

i got the ru-2820 (special ordered from autozone, came in in like 2 days, ~30$)
take the stock filter and cut it up so u can super glue the pertinent plastic pieces to the 2820 and now u have the 95$ filter.
i got the idea from another guy who posts here, he had a website with pics, etc.
i dont remember who or where, but you should be able to search and locate it

I ordered my K&N E2427 Drop-In from Summit. As always had it in stock and I had it the next day! Summit price is $65.95 + $7.95 shipping. $73.90 shipped and at my door the next day with no special shipping! Got to love the way Summit does business!!

try e-bay, you get a cold air intake for around $90.

E2427 sucks, too expensive for too little performance

The stock air filter will not work wth the ICEBOX. (Too small and will flop about)
The Comptech filter WILL however work with the stock airbox.
IN any case, the single biggest gain will be with the change of the filter element itself. I remcomend the comptech filter over any other. As good as the replacement K&N is, The comptech filter allow airflow from ALL sides including the top hence it's more open and way less restrictive. The K&N and all others including the stock element, and (even AEM) does not let air flow from the top and the element. Just the circumference.
I hope this helps.

This is damn true. I can personally testify for that. You can feel the difference big time!

Even thought the Comptech filter has foam on the end of the filter...it may or may not have as much surface area as the K&N filters. The Comptech filter is conical shaped (or tapered); whereas, the stock filter, the K&N E-2427 and RU-2820 are cylindrical shaped. So you need to look at the total surface area of each filter.

I have seen several dynos of the Comptech filter and all report a ~2 whp gain. I don't recall any K&N dyno postings (correct me if I am wrong) so why are we debating this?

. For $70 I can have a dyno proven 2 whp.

Or

. For $30 I can have a modification with unkown effect

And why this obesession with K&N filters? Is it some old school muscle car era loyalty at play?

Tru..tru..
however, the only sure way is to do a pressure drop test along tubes capped by the filters. I feel that even though you may get (and we don't know this) a very small difference in the comptech vs. the K&N, the comptech is less expensive and proven.
They are however both good choices.

Quotes given to me for a 'TEG K&N ranged from $79 to $99.
Maybe they tried to rob me or
Maybe you were lucky

Come to think of it...hmmm... you're right. It was priginally developed for the muscle car era. Oh well, makes the comptech more

Not doubting your claim, but can you provide the dyno plot which shows the Comptech filter gaining 2 whp?

The K&N filter is a very good filter. It does a good job of filtering, it has longer service intervals (when compared to foam filters) and it flows well.

BTW, 8 of the current 11 F1 teams use K&N filters. The remaining 3 (Ferrari - Sauber - Minardi) use BMC filters which are nearly identical (ie. stainless steel mess and oiled cotton gauze) to K&N. So I wouldn't really call this "old school".

I have seen several over the years but the search function is not good enought to find them. Here is one that I have saved:

The K&N filter is a very good filter. It does a good job of filtering, it has longer service intervals (when compared to foam filters) and it flows well.
How well does it flow relative to the Comptech one? It might be better but I have not seen a single data point to prove that it is.

If you have two products, A and B, and A has been shown to increase horsepower by 2 whp and you have no evidence at all about how effective B is, which one do you pick?

BTW, 8 of the current 11 F1 teams use K&N filters. The remaining 3 (Ferrari - Sauber - Minardi) use BMC filters which are nearly identical (ie. stainless steel mess and oiled cotton gauze) to K&N. So I wouldn't really call this "old school".
K&N make decent filters by all accounts - however picking K&N over Comptech for an Integra Type-R is illogical IMHO given the lack of evidence of its effectiveness. It can only be based on old school loyalty, because I cannot think of any other reason for it.

So where'd you guys get your comptech filter from? Is there a place that sells them cheaper than comptechusa.com?

ipsracing has it for $65 but i went with the K&N.
it has better filtering abilities than comptechs foam filter plus they have been in business a whole lot longer.

think about it...........comptech may flow better than K&N because of its material but how good of a filtering element is it. K&N has cotton gauze as opposed to a foam, sponge like material. that is the difference. i would not trade off high flow for a filter that wont filter elements like dirt, leaves, etc.
