Wow...it's been months... Some tips...
No tech, really... so, mods, if you want to delete/move, i understand...
Some history... in April, I had my '90 CRX HF stolen from me... since then, I've kinda avoided 4wheel hondas (my CBR is lots o' fun), and since I lack a proper Honda... this forum has been a forgotten soul.
Except I still check out CRXs. If I ever decide to get another one, I'll know exactly what to do, and do right the first time... then I figured for *****-and-giggles, I'd come check the forum out and noticed... nothing has changed.
The same stupid questions are asked (two threads about parking light mods?!), the same "best buy for" type of threads are asked.... and even more "Build" threads that are ever endless...
So, to the mods, maybe make some more Stickies? Maybe a thread about cheap/quick mods (bumper light mod), maybe a thread about insurance costs, maybe a thread about exhausts (with pictures), etc?
Some things I've learned over the course of the six or seven years of CRX ownership:
- No matter what you do... someone will not like it. Live with your decision or don't ask people their opinions.
- When in doubt, search. There's an answer to virtually every single question that you could ever ask. God knows I've answered hundreds. stop being lazy, search for it... if you can't find it, THEN ask...which is forcing other people to succeed where you failed (which is likely to happen a lot if you can't search and find the answer).
- Building a car? Research before you buy ANYTHING. Research will save you literally thousands of dollars on rework. I bought $100 koni yellows at all four corners... (read: $400 for shocks), then I bought $250 koni SSPS at all four corners... (read: $1000 for shocks). That $400 could have been used on GCs...
- Building a car? It's never gonna get done. Look at RedCivicStandard, he's been building his civic for 83 years and counting. His goddamn Great grandson is gonna be pulling the impact gun from his lifeless hand. Face it, a project car is a project car for life. When you think you're done, some retard beats you in a race and you do another tear-down and rebuild.
- 15x7.5. not 16s. not 17s. 15x7.5. If you can't get them... 15x7. Anything under 13lbs is good.
- Quaffe. Want to spend $900 in the best possible way. Quaffe... but wait till you sort out your engine/gearbox combo.
- C-pillar bars are retarded. Like a tampon with wings. Yeah, it's odd and distracting, but it's about as usefull as fisting yourself with a sock to soak up the blood.
- Big brake kits are useless when you have 175 wide, 400 treadwear tires.
- Want harnesses, they cost $500... cause the rollbar costs $350 and a good set of harness are $75/ea. This isn't an option. It's like buying a hamburger without the ham. People who have harnesses without rollbars are morons. Your parents told you to avoid those people cause they are contagious. They were right. Those people are the ones who sit in the fast lane going 10mph under the speed limit, they lick walls, and they think Transformers was a good movie (for the record, it wasn't).
- 5 or 6 point harnesses with dual shoulder straps. 3/4 (or 5 with y shoulders) aren't safe. like sleeping with a chick with herpes. Yeah, you might be ok for awhile, but the chances are, it'll come back and bite ya in the *** one day.
- No matter what engine you choose... expect to replace it in two years (or rebuild it). not cause of reliability, but because that retard who beat you in the race did it again.
- When doing wiring, plan it out. Have diagrams of what you are trying to do, clearly labeled. I rewired up a complete dash cluster with autometer guages, including warning lights, vtec controller, and various switches and crap. I did it five times. Each time felt like being forced to watch the View or listen to a GWB speech.
- If you scrape on the lane markers, your car is too low and looks like turd. raise it back up retard. if the top of your fender and the center of your wheel and the ground is less than 15", there's a problem (i would almost say 20")
- CV boot tears... easiest way to replace: remove axle. bring to autozone. get life-time warranty axle, reinstall. You now have free axles/boots for life.
- replace your hatch struts. it's cheap and makes your car seem less like a pile of crap.
- No, the AWD system from the CRV or Civic wagon doesn't fit in the CRX/Civic hatch without major redesign. People have done it. It wasn't worth the effort.
- No, the NSX Motor doesn't fit in the front of your CRX/Civic.... it barely fits in the hatch... and is hardly worth the effort.
- Mini-Me is crap. ZC is crap. Save your money and go B18 or K series. You will appreciate it soooo much more. This is especially true if you have to ask which motor to go with.
- 5 lugs on a Civic/CRX is useless. Don't bother with it. you have plenty of 4 lug wheel options and brake upgrades.
add more if you want.

Thank you for stating everything I think in my head when I scroll through threads in the EF forum. Haha. All of your points are the reason why it took me so long to get a honda-tech username...and I finally did.
Glad to see you back and sorry to see a fellow tracker have his car stolen.

I thought it was kind of an unnecessary rant that stood on a platform of nothing but opinions brought forth from personal experiences and that his seniority doesn’t or at least shouldn’t reinforce the bulimic state of facts and the obese fill of opinions that most people probably don’t care about and don’t agree with.
anyways
transformers was a good ****** movie.
and in thinking that i guess i just dont understand the complexity of this post because im one of "those people".

Kinda agree. Unnecessary. Some are damn true like search, study before buying, harnesses, etc. The others, like 503_EF9 said, are just your opinoins.
Many will choose 16's or 17's cause they like them. Many like to scrape (why, i don't know), and mini-me's and ZC's are still fair game man.
A few are obviously just to be different/innovators like the AWD swap (would love to try, BTW), 5-lugs etc.
C-pillar, big brakes= show/cool points.
And it won't. Funny read though.

We share similar opinions but I choose to disagree on your engine choices. There is nothing wrong with a D engine with a mild build (less then what would cost to swap out the D and throw in a B) and you could probably lay down more power and torque then a B16 or even B18 if you bought good parts and did the work yourself.
Now I'll add to your stuff:
The newest EF is 17 years old. That is damn old. Not only that, they probably all have more then 120XXX miles for the average car. Guess what, **** is worn out!
When I buy these cars a few things are ordered right away:
- New brakes all around, flush the fluid too
- General tune up parts
- Usually new balljoints and tie rods
- Energy suspension bushing kit
Ya, you just replaced all the suspension components, but what do you expect? These cars are getting worn out. Stop bitching about it being so shaky and sloppy.
These 'oh my car sputters' thread. Have you even bothered to check anything at all? When my car sputters there is 3 things I normally do. Check dizzy and belt timing. Check fuel quality (how old is your fuel). Replace spark plugs. Normally that should brings things up to speed. If it doesn't, well do a bit of checking around on your car before posting.
Another thing, yes, our old *** interiors rattle, what do you expect. Get some double sided tape and wedge it in between parts that rub. Stop posting asking us why, just do it.
Best information; take everything with a grain of salt on HT. I'd say 80% of what is posted is decent info, the other 20% you might aswell not even bother.

I agree with 90% of what Driven said, There are ALOT of people that just Don't understand or are to lazy to read on posts with their similar problems and have to post their stupid topics on the same ***** the last guy just answered.

Although the "Mini-Me is crap. ZC is crap. Save your money and go B18 or K series. You will appreciate it soooo much more. This is especially true if you have to ask which motor to go with." comment did not sit well with me.
Some people don't want to, plain and simple. They may prefer to run a single cam due to the price/availablilty of the motors, space in engine bay, keeping a stock look, running in specific classes, cheaper to go boost, etc. Maybe they like the lack of torque in a B16 for more traction off the line. I could go on.
Don't tell someone what motor to get. That's not what building Honda's and cars in general is about. Give people their options, and then let them decide what is best for them. I thought that went without saying...

Bwahahahaa.........the only unkind answers are from noobs....
I agree with the rant other than engines. There are just too many variables for that one.
Driven.

the engine remarks are more for ppl asking the question "what engine should I get?" i do stand by my zc and mini me comments though. I would stick with the D16 if at all possible though.
And yes, a lot of opinions, rooting in experience in dealing with a track car.

i just wanted to comment about the bumper light mod, i just made a thread about it cause i couldnt find a topic on it *i put in signal in search, get nothing* so why not post a thread? i think anything goes on an internet forum, i am a newb but i do believe that everyone has a right to ask a question. prob gonna get flamed on but at least i put my two cents

I think the moral of Driven's post is "You get what you pay for."
The problem is the EF forum is full of people (me included..) that want to go fast for pennies on the dollar in their daily driver. It can't be done. Whats the saying around here.. fast, cheap,reliable.. you can only have 2.
either way, good post with some interesting points.
