Default 6 to 1 collector i welded up tonight

the collector was an unwelded vibrant piece. i'm not too crazy about the fitment, but it works for how cheap it is. i couldn't touch the price if i were to cut it myself.

i tired welding with a little thicker rod tonight than i usually do and burn it a little hotter. beads didn't turn out as great as i wanted.

i'm using an 8 cup, 1/16th rod, 60~80amps and i'm purging until the glow is gone. anyone have any suggestions on getting better coloring on the exterior?

Yeah...

Move faster with more amperage
Get a bigger cup (better shielding) and switch to a lense
Stop every 5-7 dabs
Use a 1/16" Electrode that is sharpened in length 2.5x the diameter
grind your tungsten radially...with the wheel (this is for arc stability...will keep your beads straight)
Post purge should be around 4-5 seconds.
Shut the door...turn off the fans...get rid of any drafts.

Oh yeah... hold your breath! :-P

thats so tight !! looks sick man
does wind really afect your welds that much ?
the welder guy at my work welds with the fan on all the time(fan not pointing at him but near where he is welding) does mostly aluminum and some magneseum

thanks for the tips. i'm running a pta-9 flex head (with gass lens), you can get bigger cups then 8's for them? i'm doing most of what you suggested. i'm thinking speed is my problem more then anything.

wind with screw your welding up in a hurry.

to me it looks like your trying to add to much filler at one time. try to break it up more into smaller amounts of filler/dab. if that makes sence.

i have founs it easier to add a little bit less filler to get better consistency.

hope this helps

you're not going to have fun welding runners to that. it might have been a good idea if you would have built the manifold first, then welded stuff together so you can do the hard to reach stuff first.

this collector is for a display at the shop i work at. i also wanted to get a look at the vibrant pre-fab collectors (unwelded) too. this will probably make its way onto a 2jz ge or gte at some point in the near future. that collector is for a t4.

i'm not worried about building runnders too it. this is how i always do it. i weld collectors seperate and i weld each runner seperate, then conect them all together for a finish weld. lot easyer that way.

you can buy these from a bunch of different places for $220~$450 welded. i wouldn't typically sell the collector.

I mean, it's workable, but I don't know if I'd call that display worthy in a shop. No offense intended...I just think that display stuff should be top notch.

I was critiquing it more in terms as a personal manifold build or something, not an item for "sale" or as a display of what one could own from a professional shop. In those terms I think you should try another one since you've gotten the feel down, cause if I walked in and saw that displayed well...I'll just say I wouldn't be very impressed with it.

Sure Damien, but when a fabricator walks into ANY shop, the first thing we do is analyze everything. You gotta try that trick I told you about, it works like a mofuggin charm

So who sells cut and tacked together 6-1 collectors for T6 turbine flanges? I'm looking at doing one of these for my 2JZ. I'd rather just pay someone to cut it for me instead of monkeying around all day long trying to make one.

True, true....I've caught myself analyzing welds in the support beams at the shopping mall...lol.

I'm gettin to the stuff we talked about soon. I just have to give my beasty 4runner some love. Timing tensioner pulley blew to bits, and everything went to hell... . Just got it back running tues, then decided to get a safari rack and a pro comp bumper bar, so I'm gettin those on. I told myself when I got the truck..."self, we're not gonna get crazy here, money is for fast Honda's"...I got 35's, manual hubs, rims, lift, roof racks, lights comin....oh man...what a disease.

Whoa....them boys are too hardcore for me man...lol. Driving lowered cars for about 9 years...going to a lifted truck makes that sh*t way scarier...lol. My Yota is still rockin IFS front suspension and I'm unlocked. Those Jeep guys hit the solid axle only territory's. I'd like to get with a crew that does a little lighter stuff though. My issue is I use my truck as a daily, so I really can't beat it too hard. Just got my roof rack built though, and my Hella's on the front...yee hoo!

Hey....where's the O.P. been....he's gone, never to return.

i'm not trying to price things out. i'm not a sponsor. i was just saying people charge a wide range. $220 for a collector like this is pretty cheap.

this is going to be a display for about 2 weeks. then its going on a manifold. i was also trying somthing a little different (welding wise). i've been a little paranoid about little pretty welds, so i was trying to get somthing a little beefier.

heres a couple i've done in the last couple months

i'm trying to get lovefab welds, but its pretty hard to make them big without getting a lot of burn.
