How many Stock Transmission guys at 600+whp?
Just wondering how many guys out there are running stock transmissions (not including LSD's)? I was wondering if anyone had any tips or tricks that help preserve our gears! Also, post up what clutches you are using, as well as power level, axle level and all that. Thanks!
740hp, DSS stage 5, Tilton Twin Cerametallic, Stock trans, Quaife LSD. We dont race much so they hold up fine, (same transmission for 3 years, just broke 2nd gear 1 time) but alot of the other guys have 10 times more passes than we do and you just have to consider that a stock trans can break right away or can last you awhile. there is no timeframe on how long they last.
592 hp..(mustang dyno)and 401torque....stock LS tranny with stock b16LSD....stock axels.............been 3 years on same tranny.....countless # of 9-second passes.
remedy for non breakage: light car=less stress.....also....lots of pre-load......
clutch.....ACT 6puck solid hub...with an extreme pressure plate.

im @ 700hp on h22 tranny and only had problems 1 time o the dyno w 4th gear. My theory into saving tranny is NO SOLID MOUNTS!!! Again that is just my 2 cents
Everybody will have different results with OEM gears but here are my results.
It has alot to do with the driving style.
When I was at 600+WHP...I had really good luck with stock gears.
At 700+ WHP the car would make about one race event and then break when the car went on the dyno.
At 800+WHP the car wouldnt make it through the dyno section.
I would say just get a Liberty gear set if you are making 700+WHP. It just saves time and money in the long run.
Competition clutch twin disk W/ DSS stage 5.9...currently at 829 WHP and 540 TQ.
I've tried the 5th gear handcuff and also heat treatments and it does help make the gears last longer but regardless your limited to gears that weren't made for that type of power levels.

Where do I start… its all in the clutch if your making over 600.
I think im the only one to go through transmissions every single race.
Once you pass that certain hp marker you will need a aftermarket trans.
The only thing that holds up in my oem trans are the MFactory first gear and final drive. Not a dent in those bad boys! But 2nd 3rd and 4th are a different story.
3.070 first gear by MFactory has been proven to drop over .3 tenths with a good suspension setup and is really affordable as well complete oem drop in.

we were using stock transmissions for the past 2 years until this year. our only upgrades were, aftermarket final drive (taller and made of superior materials), cuff, and a spool (had to use to fit our axle setup) we usually get around 10 or so pass's out of the gear sets before something breaks. we broke ~3 differant gears over those years. and one of those times was due to negligence on our part. the oem gears seem to hold up very well if you dont shock the drivetrain on the launch or on the shifts. we were making ~820 to the tires, and our best run was 9.0@156
710 whp, no real clean runs but it is the same trans i ran last year 10.7's with the exception of a gsr 4th, and this year they were treated by racer stev.
they seem to be doing well, but i know its day will come.
stock b16
gsr 4th
liberty cuff
quaife diff
dss 5.9's

i made 700whp and 455ftlbs,comp clutch twin disc, dss 3.9,gsr trans, quafie, carbon coated syncros and stock gears with only ring and pinion problems treated or not.
Yeah And I think your one of the few that actually put some power through them. Most the people that have it say they don't break but yet don't have the power to break them regularly anyway.

13 pages of my grief. Car is making around 650-700whp, was running a tilton cerametallic twin disc and the car weighs 2600lbs. Been through tons of 3rd and 4th gears and final drives. Tried the cuff and that crap didn't work. Carbon coated syncros......cryo treatment....didn't work still. Each time I changed parts, I bought a new tranny I was so sick and tired of breaking parts. I started using the e-brake when launching to pre-load the car and that would help me make it through about 10 or so launches with out breaking the final drive....but it still didn't help the other gears.
Got my gears treated by racerstev, switched to a tilton carbon carbon twin disc and a tilton flow control valve. Since this, I have over 30 10.10-10.21@145-149mph passes and about 2k hard street miles. Car still weighs around 2600lbs street trim.
Some people get lucky with stock missions that have tons of miles on them and they never fail them or only once in a blue moon. Others can't make it one pass. Depends a lot on the weight of the car, clutch, pre-loading, gear ratio, tire size, etc.

I got 80 passes last year on a stock trans with a flow control valve and carbon/carbon clutch, all 750+hp and most 9 sec. passes. Finally broke a 4th gear under power. It really is all in the clutch.
I agree with tony. I still have a crappy ACT 6 puck and exteme PP. I can feel it slip so I am sure it saves trannies. I have stock axles stock 104K mile ITR tranny and made 556whp 399wtq in my 2700-2800lb pig

i make 680 hp, 441 lb-ft torque. my trans is stock H22 geartrain with quaife lsd CC twin disc clutch. i made about 6 passes on it w/o trans. problems until i broke 2nd gear. i had that replaced and have 4 passes on it w/o problems so far. i've broken 4 axles along the way though (DSS old stage 5's). the car weighs 2315 w/me and is on 25x8.7x13 slicks.
