Can you tell me why this kid wants you to do this for him? After seeing you type this "I've never seen a f22 without the cover or where the covers are" I wouldn't let you wash my car let alone touch the engine.

ah, come on now, thats a bit harsh don't you think? Just because he hasn't worked on one doesn't mean he cant do the work or have a manual that'll show him the proper procedure (but I guess that may be a stretch because if he did he wouldn't be asking ). But he is here looking for advise so lets play nice

Anyways, tdozz07, what Mr Wonderfull was saying was that the covers need to come off. Therefor since the covers need to come off then obviously the crank pulley has to come off to remove the lower cover. Just take a look in the FAQ for the write-up on how to replace the timing belt and water pump, that'll show you pictures of where things are located and the covers. Should help you see why the crank pulley needs to be removed.

more...since to replace w.p. requires removing timing belt-it connects to w.p.-and balancer belt one should reference touring accord writeup -this forum-esp. to break 180 ft lb crank bolt and the autozone.com howto specifically for the car model.
it is foolish to not replace timing belt unless just recently done.
also to replace w.p. requires removal of cam sprocket.
i just replaced my oe w.p. at 70k miles although it was like new.
btw, haynes was useful but a bit confusing to me at the same time.

You are the second person to mention that recently, what year do you have? And are you able to get a picture showing why (I am curious)? I wonder if this is only for the F23 engine? I've never worked on a 98-02 so I dont know.

This isn't the case for the F22Bx's and I don't recall anyone saying this was necessary on the F22Ax's

You dont have to remove the cam sprocket on the F23 either. I just changed the timing belt and water pump on my 99 I4 and did not remove the cam sproket. I don't really see how removing it would have made the job easier.

so it doesn't "require" it to be removed then, ok.
