D16a6 si Tranny Grinds Info..
I was at the race track a few weeks ago..
I was racing my 89 si with si tranny. Every High RPM shift the 3 gear grinds a little bit. Is this common with 89-91 si trannys? And Yes I am pushing the clutch in all the way. Its a slight grind because of high rpm shifting. Other then that I have no problems driving on the streets. I guess what I want to know is this normal other si trannys probably do the same thing..
anyone know.. only happens when I redline the car and shift into 3rd..

ad 2-3 synchro. I've seen many of them go.....
Your best bet is to replace the synchros or use GM sychromesh fluid and see if that helps.
If it still grinds using the GM fluid then you'll have to tear down or replace the tranny.
My CRX Si did that until I replaced the synchros.

I am using gm trans fulid. My tranny I think is ok I have no problems shifting but only happens at high rpms. Maybe I am shifting it to fast. I drag race a lot with my Integra k24. I might need to take it a little easy.
I have put more then 25k miles on this tranny without any problems. I just went to the track with my beater recently..

old weak tranny, drag racing, high revs, shifting fast..kind of obvious, and if you have to use syncromesh than your tranny is not ok,,just cause that thick **** hides the grinds doesn't mean it fixes it..
If your serious about fixing your trans you need to at least replace your syncros and blocking rings for 3rd gear. The reason that you dont have the problem during normal driving is because your syncro is able to slow the transition of the 2-3 shift without much fuss. When you go for the high rpm shifts and your syncro has wear it loses it's ability to slow everything down so the grinding you hear is the hub clashing into the gear. If this continues it WILL get worse.

haha. I have been driving the car like this for the last 25,000 miles without any problems. It might be going out but not fast enough. I am going to swap a hf tranny soon save on gas.

anyone here ever had their transmission rebuilt by Gearspeed? carbon synchro coating, custom rebuilds (gearswaps and LSDs)... sounds very sweet but probably hella expensive.

yea labor is hella expensive.

Synchromesh is garbage, I put it into my crx and it made it grind worse than before putting it in. Honda MTF is far better, synchromesh is a sales gimmick if you ask me.
you should talk to "transzex" in the d-series.org transmission section. he is the d-series trans guru, and has reasonable prices AFAIK.

Depends on who you are talking about. For those who know what we do...its not expensive. For those uninformed about transmission work and the costs to do it correctly without cutting corners...well then it may seem expensive. Do some research on it and see what it costs to do it correctly. Remember that your transmission is just as important as the engine that spins it
Synchromesh....LOL! Save your money. If you have a grinding trans...its obviously got an issue. No trans fluid is going to magically fill in all the wear and tear...its only a lubricational mask.
As for "gurus"......I had to fix two "guru built" transmissions this week. You think your saving money by having a "guru" build your trans...then find out it its not completly fixed or done poorly and have to send it to someone like me to fix the whole mess. So make sure you are sending it to someone reputable and not a self proclaimed "guru." There are some good and some really shitty ones. In the end...you get what you pay for. I will not go into naming anyone but, damn they are ghetto. This is not related to the guy that was suggested above by sanimalp...I have never heard of him and I cannot speak on his work.
Good luck with the HF trans....I think even at $3.41 a gallon here in cali...I would still stick with an Si trans anyday.
You shouldn't be concerned with gas mileage until you hit your 50th b-day
j/k!

I'd start with the rear tranny mount, then a worn CRX 1-2 shifter fork for the grinds, rarely a brass synchro is the cause on D series.
James, I trust those aren't anything of mine your working on

The worst feeling, you never hear from them again, but let one have a minor issue and everyone hears about it.</TD></TR></TABLE>
Would never put you on blast if that ever happened. I highly doubt you would have an issue. If you do...it happens, fix it and move on
I don't like drama. We have a couple of knuckleheads in the area that claim they are good at what they do when they aren't. They claim the "guru" status and their work is gross. We had to fix a couple of them and found things backwards and clearances were way off. They also used parts that I would have thrown in the scrap bucket! LOL!
