pissed about my 01 civic transmission went.. should i contact honda myself??
so my transmission went according to the honda dealer. My car is a 01 civic lx and only 71k miles. I'm pissed that the car went a little beyond it's warranty. The dealer tell me that i need to get all the oil paper work before they submit my case to honda customer relations but it looks like i may end up footing the entire bill.
my question is if i should let the dealer fight this case for me or should i contact honda HR myself?? the transmission replacement is looking like $4000 and the retail value for the car is only 6-7 thousand.
please help.

anyhow, price aside, should i call honda myself to get this dealt with.. i know it's out of warranty but they do plenty of good will reapirs especially for things like this. i was wondering which way will get more money..
1. i talk to honda
2. dealer talk to honda
i mean transmissions shouldn't just go after 70k miles. i don't even drive it hard.

4k is what a dealer would charge. your best bet is to go to an independent shop and have it replaced with a rebuilt unit. make sure it has a warranty. you could probably get away with spending 2500 or so that route.
but try honda first, they might cover part of it. still the dealer will have you grabbing your ankles.
edit.. isn't there a TSB about these turds transmissions?

i'm even considering asking the dealer for a trade in and just get another car.. but i have this feeling that i'm asking asking for more *** raping if i even mentioned that route to the dealer..
i just hope they at least fight for me in front of honda to cushion the bill a bit

what were some of the characteristics of the transmission before it started goin on ya?
Did it miss gears, take a while to rev and tehn shift gears...? Mine might need to be replaced soon too. In that case....5 speed!

anyways, if you want to bring me your car, we can work out a deal that will probably make you want to keep your car. Does it drive at all? Im in Rockville, MD, not far from DC. PM me if you want me to look at it.

i believe there was a tsb on it.. bad clutch pack carrier; replace tranny.. i think u should try to talk to honda directly. i've heard some people got it fixed for free and others' were not.
so...my auto tranny is about to go on me and i know its gonna be worse in the winter. skip.. what kinda deal are u hinting at?.. 5sp?

the price of the trans is not what u pay for at the dealer it is the possible 10 plus hours at 95-110 dollars an hour is what makes the bill add up got to a non-dealer shop
There was a TSB...I sent a PM to the guy who started the thread...We need to get that TSB posted in the FAQ's b/c I could see it benefitting MANY. I've sent it to 3 guys in the past 2 days...
If someone can help me with hosting the PDF...I'll be happy to help get it posted!

sry got the late reply. my noob member status only allowed me to post 5 a day.
the current status is that honda stepped in to talk with the dealer and they were able to bring my rates to "warranty" rates. The difference is HUGE. i was initially quoted the following:
Dealer quote:
1. Parts $3658
labor 7hrs at $100/hr = 700
Honda warranty rates:
1. Parts $12xx
labor $470
on top of the reduced rate, honda offered a 50/50 split for the entire cost of the repair. I'm trilled about the honda's service but rather have not had this little breakdown at 70k at all. at the end of the day, honda stepped up for me and made my ownership exp a lot better.

Ya know i am never going to buy an auto Honda ever. I mean ever. I already tell people not to get auto Hondas because of the stuff i am hearing around trannys going at 70k or less.
Thats what Honda gets for making a car in Ohio.
