i use the one that came with my A* leathers. haven't really tried anything else, but the one i use is very light and comfortable, and seems to offer the norm for protection.
I bought a UFO back protector through my local shop a few months ago. It's a 3/4 and fits really well with my MotoGP suit and 'speed hump' on the back. Looks like this one:

Cost around $80 and probably could have gotten it cheaper somewhere else, but I like giving business to local shops.
I bought it because it's extra protection and most tracks either suggest wearing one or require you to wear one. Took a little getting used to, but now I feel nakey without it

I got the A*star one that Life Sux Die posted:

I'll sell you it cheap. I'm gonna get a bohn or something else for next year

Bohn Pro Racer bp

Pros - very slim, still protective
Cons - a bit more expensive than others
I used to have the A* Tech bp that LSD and #9 posted. It adds an effective 3" to your waist, though, which made it difficult for my fat *** to squeeze into leathers.
I plan on adding the Bohn chest protector.

I wear full track gear for every day riding, but I understand a suit can be too much for some people... but there is no reason not to wear a back protector under your jacket. I would take road rash over a back injury any day.

Why for? I've got the same one... seems to be ok, but its a little bulky.

sportbiketrackgear has the Bohn carbon one for $149.99

I'm thinking it'll be worth it for the added protection and more comfortable fit. I know there's some other good stuff out there like Knox or Spidi but it can get even more expensive. Have you considered a chest protector when you start racing?

Well, definitely try before you buy. All I know is I measured around my belly, one inch below the belly button (as recommended by ZCustom), and with the A*, it was 3" bigger/rounder.

That's a good price. My Pro Racer Air was $150 from Terra....but Sportbiketrackgear has some killer deals. I was going to call them yesterday about one of those Hein Gericke Celtic suits...but I guess I'll wait til the bike deal is finalized.

does that dinese piece add inches to your waist ?</TD></TR></TABLE>
A little bit. Before my suit was a snug fit, now it's really snug. If you already feel like you're going to burst the zipper, it won't fit.
