Found some metal shavings in my oil pan... wondering where there from and what to look for?
I had plans on boosting my Ls motor, It ran PERFECT when i had it in my hatch. I pulled it out to swap into my coupe and took the oil pan off to replace the gasket (expletive autozone gaskets
) and i noticed a few shavings in the bottom of my pan.
Now i know the difference between like metal soot and shavings.. and these where def. shavings. Like the one was the size of a dime, they were thinner than paper and upon grabing one with some tweezers it like broke into a million pieces. Itook oil pump off and that big cover on the bottom as well (its a B18a sorry forgot to say) and grabbed a flashlight and started snoopin around in my internals..
I didnt find/see anything that looked to be chewed up. My cylinder walls looked good and everything seemed to be tight and together.
Any ideas? and should i be worried? i hadn't planned on doing a 15lb boosted Ls.. was gonna do a simple 8lbs and build another motor later need be.
Any help would be appreciated
thanks

pretty sure you should take the whole oil sending unit and everything out of the inside and check it all over really well so you dint miss anything... and if you did your gonna be sorry you ran it with shavings that size your lucky it even ran.. lol
Its more than likely parts of main bearings or your rod bearings. neither of which need to come apart.

so are the shaving something to be concerned about.. Or does that mean the motor is just wearing down and getting old?

i was about to say that, it could totally be one of the bearings, did it just look like a shaving or was ther any discoloration.
main bearings are something that you want to keep nice and smooth same with any bearing really. but to grab em you gotta do a loootof BS. have you ran your car recently and noticed any more things like that on the bottom of the pan? nah a healthy motor should not leave those deposits in the oil even if it is old.
have you spun the crank to get a look at all of the bottom end?

Yeah went to my friends house (Pandahatch) and he old me pretty much everything to look for and to hope its just rod bearings. Ill be going to honda here soon i guess and picking a few up.
thanks for th info gus. appreciate it
does anyone have a good pic of where the numbers are on my crank to see which kinda of bearings i need ?
I was looking in a haynes manual but i got kinda lost bc they started rambling on about the differences in SOHC and DOHC
