Bad news on my daughter's 01 EX 5-speed. Tranny ran low on oil when CV axle popped out of tranny and affected reverse shifting. Original 5th gear popping out of gear was fixed by topping up with Honda MTF. Now, reverse has to be shoved in to engagement point, and it's hard to disengage.
The car now can only go forward.

Had to give her my Accord and drove the Civic home.

So I am thinking of getting a used tranny for replacement.
What year and models will fit the D17A2 engine? I did check out the FAQ but nada.
I saw a tranny for a 1999 D16Y8 Civic EX Vtec for cheap and wondering if this will fit.

I have my tranny from my old D15Y3 (civic 2001) installed in D17A1....01-05 tranny will work i reckon.

 

Searching would have benefitted you. You can't use any previous or newer model Civics, than the 2001-2005. You'll need a 2001-2005 Civic transmission.

 

Fixing that transmission won't be hard. It's only 5% damaged. I wouldn't scrap it just yet.

Replacing this part will fix the problem.

I have never opened a Honda transaxle. I only work on Porsche transmissions, like 944 and 911.

Any recommendation on where to get a good Honda transmission service manual?

Does it matter if it is an EX or LX because I found a 2003 transmission and the seller does not know if it is LX or EX?

The gearing differs, but either will bolt up.

Thanks. Do you know how much the LX will be off compared to the EX?

The Civic will be parked and taken out of insurance coverage until I find the time and motivation to fix it. Maybe sometime in the early spring. I'll try to fix the tranny reverse as IN VTEC had suggested.

 

If you've done RWD transmissions, a FWD Honda transmission is a piece of cake. You won't need any non-OTS special tools for this job. I'm trying to do a FD3S transmission right now and you need so many different pullers and special tools, it's unbelievable compared to a Honda transmission.

A bearing splitter, 2-jaw puller or a pusher/puller are probably all you'll need. Other special tools like a blind hole puller, seal/bearing drivers, or a mainshaft thrust clearance special tools won't be needed f you stick with basic repairs.

If you need OTC part numbers for the splitter(s), 2-jaw puller, or blind hole puller, I have those listed somewhere.

With 98k miles on the transmission, I would replace the two differential bearings, clutch housing mainshaft bearing and seal, and any other bearings that exhibit a lot of noise, axial and/or radial play, or are visibly damaged.

Remove everything in the casing, remove the Hondabond sealant using the green Scotch-brite pads and laquer thinner, clean both halves in a parts washer, and apply Hondabond HT to the sealing edges to seal the casing parting line when you're ready to close it up.

Thanks for the info. That will make me feel better. I have all the tools, bearing puller, splitters and blind hole pullers.
You are correct, since the case is open, I will change the diff case bearings, mainshaft front brg and seal and whatever needs to be replaced upon inspection.
I can hear the 4th and 5th gear humming a little so I may replace some needle bearings?

I've never seen the needle bearings get so bad that they've ever needed to be replaced, but if you must, then replace them. They're pretty expensive at about $15 to $20 each. At least you'll only need two, one for each gear you want to replace the bearings for.

Ok I am a new Honda owner and via the interwebs am learning a little about about my newly acquired 2000 Honda Civic EX coupe. I have found a 2000 SI engine I have put an email inquiry in about, can I get the SI transmission for that model year and have it work on my EX or no? Like I said I'm new to Honda and am wanting to do this right but am also curious if I could get a 2006 SI engine and 6 speed manual transmission to work in my 2000 and how much of a hassle would it be? Any direction to find answers would be very appreciated thank y'all for your time to read this I apologize for the book lol.

Got it at a bargain price but want to focus on drivetrain first


Will eventually change the wheels also what is the best sounding exhaust for the civic? I'm a V8 guy preferably so something mean and throaty is preferred lol. Any suggestions are helpful.
