Default Is it really that hard to install a turbo?

I have almost all the things to turbo my car and I got to thinking if it would be possible for me to install it or should I have a shop do it? I have everything made for the model of car I have so it should all fit without too much modding. I also have a large amount of hand tools and air tools. The only thing I am worried about is if it will be too hard, the biggest project I've done is install a Skunk2 intake manifold by myself. So for all the people that have installed a turbo on their car, If I set aside a good amount of time do you think a first timer could do it?

Take it to a pro, turbos are more complicated than a supercharger or nitrous. Plus a first timer should never try and tune

This is a very open statement, but some people have to start somewhere.

It relates to job experience. Everyone must have it, but no one wants to give it.

To Progress:

Just put " A LOT " of thought in what you are about to do...

Doing it yourself is def. a good way to learn. Just make sure you have somebody that knows what he is doing be there for to make sure the installation goes correctly.

its really not difficult at all, if you have all the parts u need, and i mean EVERYTHING. then it isnt difficult at all. The first time i EVER worked on my car or a car for that matter was my turbo install. It took me 2 months but thats because i took it all apart before i got al the parts i needed. But i did get it done. Its not difficult. Do alot of reading! so you sorta have a clue on what your doing. good luck!

I will not be tuning it myself, I will take it to a shop for that.

The parts that I have are:
Spoolin Performance Ramhorn Manifold
Garrett T3/T4
Spoolin 3" downpipe
IC piping and FMIC
Tial 38mm Wastegate
Tial Blow off valve
Oil line kit
T-Bolt clamps and couplers
Fuep pump
Injecters

dont forget the vacuum hose and gaskets lol, and if at all possible try to get another oil pan to make the return before you even start installing the kit, makes things easier imo, also hold off on the injectors until you get to your tuner unless you have a basemap or the car will run like dodo

I don't see why not.

as long as you have all the tools, time, and have another car to drive. my tips is get a gear wrench (racheting box end) having that could save you some headache and speed up the process.

worse come to worst, you just gotta find a "tuner" and trailer/tow the car there if you're really stuck or lost interest to continue on your own.

Do it yourself. Trust me you can do it. The only thing ive done before was install an intake on my car I then pieced together a turbo kit and read alot on here. Once I got everything I needed, put the car on jackstands, and just started taking stuff off. Its really simple, just take your time and in the end, you will be glad you did it yourself, as you would have just learned SO much about your car.

Good Luck

How long did it take for you guys to get the job done? Think a week is enough time for me to do it?

Its not too hard to install everything if you have the tools, time and knowledge. Basic mechanical skills are needed, but you dont have to be a genius by any means.

The first turbo setup is the longest because you have to do all the menial **** that takes forever. My first setup (from clutch to full install of the turbo setup) probably took me a total of 45 hours, if not a little more. I took my time because i didnt want to half-*** anything. The following 2 setups took less than 5 hours each, but they weren't as in depth as the first. As long as you dont rush and you do things the correct way, you should have no problems. Enjoy the install, its one of the more fun parts...

this might be a dumb question, but I've been wondering about it for a while...since its not safe to tune yourself on the street, is it possible to tune yourself on a drag strip? If it is, then that seems like a better idea than paying so much money to get tuned on a dyno.

tuning at a strip would suck, i.e. long lines to wait in for your turn to go. Plus it would be a better idea to get it dyno tuned.....

seems like it would be worth the wait, if you could get fully tuned within 4 or 5 passes down the strip though rather than paying a few hundred bucks to 1k for a dyno tune?

As everyone said, take your time, make sure nuts are tight, washers are in place, gaskets are seated properly etc.

And make as much space as possible, my friend and I did an Eclipse build and taking out the radiator made things alot easier. Do mock up fits too

Installing a turbo is not hard.

Installing it correctly and making the car run correctly on the other hand... an aweful lot of people still haven't figured it out.

Hey man that write up on how to install a full turbo kit is a godsend and it has illustrations to walk you through the steps. Trust me man I am going to do my setup myself but I am going to have an experienced person there to double check what I do. It should be easy and fun to get under there and save urself a couple 100 dollars

As long as the turbo kit is a true "bolt on" kit, then it shouldn't take more than a few hours. Just follow the directions, and make sure you understand how everything works.

-kits are mostly bolt on.

-usually have to mod manifold, piping, intercooler region(bumper).

-turbo bolt up is the easy part. tuning is the important part on how to do correctly.
