could check the steering column near the pedal area behind the plastic and also check behind the steering wheel.. now of course this problem sounds like it could be serious so get a buddy that knows if your not sure

Sounds like the steering rack is going.

Have it checked out by a Pro. You can replace them but it a big job.

I've replaced 2. One when the engine was out. That was easy.

do you have aftermarket steering wheel on car with a aftermarket hub? the same happened to me when i purchased a cheap hub to put my nrg steering wheel and the material of the hub was cheap and eventually worn away the teeth in the hub wihich made my steering wheel spin. thats all the info i can provide. hope it helps if thats the case.

Very long time ago with American made car, brand new car and driving around the entire US for a summer vacation, doing about 100MPH out through the Desert SW when the steering wheel came off and fell in my dads lap. The nut that was suposed to hold the wheel on was just laying in there behind the horn center piece. We drove like regular people drive to the nearest dealer to get it put back on for free.

JESUS FUCKEN CHRIST MAN...

But yeah, we are the only "PRO's" around here so we'll have to make due with whatever lil experiance and knwledge we have lol.

I got a new rack but it's power steering. So I guess I'll be starting a "power-steering install" thread soon.

I will try and remember to post the link in this thread as well.

Okay, so we want to rule out everything else. I will be out of town on business for a lil bit and so the customer's car will have to wait til then. He only drives like a mile to work and back so no biggie I hope.

And major thanks to john666, 1992Si, rhdekhatchie, and Duane_in_Japan.

Has your car ever been broken into, causing the column to need replacing? If so, the bracket at the bottom might have the bolt in backwards.
