Default Team VX - Vtec-e fans only.

If you have a Civic VX or something else with a d15z1 vtec-e "powerplant" post it up.

Also post your MPG and your mods. For the MPG, only post it if you have documented it, no BS numbers please.

Here is mine:

Only mpg mod so far:

Mods:

Lowered a bit on Maxspeed coilovers and AGX struts.
Apexi WS2 exhaust
Del Sol lightweight seats
Added stereo, antenna, speakers, clock, arm-rest
"EK" sideskirts
Front mudflaps
Tires at 38 psi for easier rolling

MPG:

I wanna do a d15z1 swap converted to obd1 with an HF trans into an 88-91 hatch; but I can't afford insurance on two vehicles at the time.

how is blocking off the radiator beneficial?
sure less air forced into the engine bay = less drag
but i'd rather the motor run cooler/safer than getting a higher MPG.

That sucks man. Insurance on a second car is usually very cheap though. And if you can find the parts cheap enough, the car will pay itself off very fast with the gas prices right now.

I average 46.7 - my buddy averages 58 mpg with his 03 insight manual I believe.

Good numbers guys.

This might be true for some motors, but VX motors last a LONG time. Most VXs actually came with a grill block from the factory (but most blew-out since they were installed behind the grill or the bumper was replaced). The d15z1 uses a lean-burn mode where it utilizes the factory wideband and 12 valves to create a swirling affect in the cylinder where the car can run fine at around 20:1 AFR. In order for the engine to get into this lean-burn mode, it needs to be up to temperature quickly. The grill block helps since it keeps less cold air going in to cool-down the engine and wideband sensor.

Another VX only part is the higer temp thermostat. These came with 195 degree t-stats from the factory. Honda understood that higher engine temps equal a motor that can get into lean-burn faster and stay warm and efficient.

I really don't see how these motors aren't safe from the factory since most go well over 200k miles before they even start smoking at all. The one my car came with had 238k on it when I bought it, and still barely took any oil while getting amazing MPG. A major reason the VX motor lasts so long is due to the gearing of the tranny. At 70 mph the car will still be under 2500 RPM.

my DX has one where the A/C was.

What is the trans code for the vx?

So I've almost tied an insight...not too bad I guess. The old EPA rating (pre-2007) is still my short-term goal. Which is 51 MPG I believe.

46.3 is a start.

I hope to guy a MPG gauge soon (scangauge or supermid) so that I can adjust my driving habits even more to save more gas. The shift-light in the VX (which i just got working for this tank of gas) really helps to keep the car in lean-burn, so I'm interested to see how much my MPG will go up this time.

I still need to replace the t-stat to the original temp one, and install my hot-air sucking OEM intake. Those two should also give me some improvement I hope.

The vx has no trans code really... The only way to find out for sure is to spin them and count the # of revolutions. Mista Bone had helped me find out the # of turns it should equate to, but I don't remember off the top of my head.

A Vx or Cx tranny (same exact gearing) will help you MPG a lot if you do any highway driving.

The VX also had one installed behind the grill slats on the bumper cover. I'll see if I can dig up a picture of one to post.

Strange. I'll upload it so it works.

I got the car lowered already, so I don't have any before/after info on that. From what I've been reading, lowering a car so that too much air doesn't flow underneath it is a good idea for mileage, but there is also a point that is too low. I think mine is at that point, but from talking to some people on gassavers.org no one is too sure about what is too low to make airflow worse.

I'm going to raise it up once it starts snowing here, so then I should have some info to see if the MPG goes down.

edit:
reuploaded the pic, hope it works now

Sweet mpg numbers!!

I know I havnt owned any VX's, but the two Da9's I owned have got as high as 38mpg on the highway, my 240sx never got any higher than 26mpg(gay)...probably becuase I had a 2-way diff.

My 2000 Trans Am, on the other hand, is not bad at all. I averaged 27mpg, with a mix of hwy and city driving. Mostly city, though.

That's quite a good idea if it's a daily driver. Around 50 MPG is something that makes driving a lot easier on your pocket.

I would think there would be some other people on Honda-tech with VXs who are MPG lovers, but I can't seem to find them...

Good luck finding your own VX! Greatest DD I've ever owned!
