Default sohc or dohc zc?

Aight im gonna save up this winter and go for a motor, but i dont know what to get?? i know im gonna get it boosted with whatever i get, but what would be fast when i get a swap then get a turbo. the only internal thing i'll do probably is cams and thats is, when i dont have the turbo. oh and i dont wnat to hear "get a b series" i only work part time, with school and all.

the Mini me (SOHC VTEC) has a 9:2:1 compression wich its good for turbo setups.. get that. better than a turbo ZC and has same HP and its the most powerful SOHC honda made....(on civics & D series)

Either motor would be a good choice. The SOHC Vtec motor would be more work than a dohc zc. I personally would boost the zc.

you want a turbo and a motor, and you are in school, so you don't want to spend too much money. and you don't want to hear "get a B16."

let me point out how you just contradicted yourself. you said you "don't want to spend a lot of money" but you do want a turbo setup.

any turbo setup, as well as any motor swap costs a lot of money. don't get me wrong, turbo's are cool, but they have no place on a honda motor that is not built and has the proper engine management. honda motors, with the exception of the "life" are not meant to be turbocharged. the rods can't take the boost, the cylinders cannot take the boost, the compression is often too high, and aside from the fact that the motor can't take over 10 pounds without a full engine management system, this is very good reason to make the smart choice, to set your car up the way honda meant it to be: ALL MOTOR and using the B16 powerplant.

you will be looking at two very different bottom lines, one is a turbo ZC, this will probably run you around $2500 if you do all the work yourself.

the other is a B16 with the cost of all the installation parts. again, probably around $2500, all said and done. the B16 WILL be faster, more reliable, and have MUCH more potential.

you decide, but ask yourself this-do you want to spend a little bit now for a ZC, get sick of it and spend more later for a B16? i did. and i never regretted selling that ZC. also ask yourself this- how many pro drag racers out there are using D series motors? and how many are using B series motors? the answer should be more than enough to convince you to save your money and go fast the right way, with a B series naturally aspirated motor.

I agree with most of the above. I just did a ZC turbo, and you're looking at around $2700 (motor included) for a ZC, turbo, intercooler, and BOV but still using the factory ECU. I disagree that a B16 will still be faster if your talking a stock B16 (which is what you were indicating for around $2500 complete). I would race another civic with a stock B16 as the car sits now (totally untuned) with no fear of loosing.

As for hearing the vtec... don't plan on it from the SOHC. I have one in my other hatch, and I can assure you that I can't tell when the vtec kicks in on a SOHC for the life of me. I've tried hard to notice it and can't. Personally I hate that motor. Its really boring and gutless on the top end compared to my ZC (before the turbo). I've driven other SOHC cars and I feel the same way. Maybe with a turbo added to the mix you'll notice the vtec more, but personally I'd go B16 (even though you didn't want to hear it) B18 (much cheaper and great for boost) or ZC (cheap and fun) before SOHC vtec.

you're not going to hear vtec in an SOHC.
and that's not a reason to choose the SOHC over the DOHC.
get the DOHC ZC. definitely a fun and reliable motor, boosted or not.

yea i said i dont wana spend alot of money, that doesnt mean on a turbo. i can get a kit for 300 bucks, i mieant i dont wana spend 1200 for a turbo kit or a motor. and as far as internally i said i dont wana do anything internally until i get a turbo. and yes i know a motor needs to be "beefy" for a turbo, im not that stupid!!

my d16z6 with minor bolt-ons, would make light work of b16's, and now with the turbo, it makes light work of most everything

it ran a 14.8 on motor, and 14.0 now. you never know....i just got a really good running motor..it put 128hp to the wheels when i first put it in, and had only intake, and that motor is only rated at 125...so ya never know
