Timing Belt
I installed a new timing belt with h23 manual tensioner. I got the belt on and rotated the crank counterclockwise about 3-4 cam teeth and it tightenup up on the exhaust side but between the water pump and intake cam gear there is a good amount of slack and when the motor runs the belt is flopping everywhere. Did i do something wrong or does it normally move like that ?
Did you adjust the tensioner so the slack come out. What you should do when you put the belt on turn the engine over by hand and adjust the tensioner when you get slack. Why did you move the crank a few teeth to get the belt on? Better check and make sure your at TDC on cams and Crank or your going to have more problem than just the belt tensioner.
To put the belt on you need to adjust the tensioner all the way down so that you have enough slack to get then belt on. Then you need to loosen it to get the right tension on the belts then tighten it to tq specs.
did that and its too loose ? I have no idea, it went on and it was damm hard to get on, now its tight as hell on the front side by between the water pump and intake cam gear its loose. I have no idea why. And then tensioner is torqued to spec.
Maybe i installed the h23 tensioner improperly. There should only be the one spring correct ? This is with the balance shafts removed. Any pics ?

Mabey you got the wrong size belt. I just did my manual conversion and I had to install the belt first then install the manual tensinor. That **** is tight as hell. Did the balance belt as well.

well the belt is the same for the 4th and 5th gen. So if anyone with either model has done the conversion let me know. According to those pics it seems everything was done correctly.

Do not use the H23 belt
use the H23 tensioner related items that's about it. Keep your H22 crankgear, waterpump and cams gears. With an H22 T-belt

Have you ever done a timing belt before? I don't see why you're having so much trouble. It installs just like an H23 timing belt. Follow the tensioning procedure for the H23 timing belt, and you're set.
Like md23vtec said, use the H22 belt.
It won't be that difficult to install if you don't use the L-bracket that's used to lock the tensioner in place. Just don't install that part, and use two shorter bolts in place, since those bolts go through the oil pump and into the block.

Ahh good eye
The L bracket is missing all together now that I look at it. Along with the balancer marks thats are miss aligned.

I installed 1 belt with that L-bracket. Never again. It's not needed, and when you remove it and replace the bolts with shorter bolts, you can get a LOT more slack on the belt which makes it tons easier to install.

. All personal preferance I guess. My one buddy hates it on his h22/h23's like you do.

I said removing or not installing the L-bracket makes the timing belt installation easier on a manual tensioner conversion because you can get more slack on the belt.
As for your timing belt tensioning question, I believe I answered that. I've done 4 or 5 manual tensioner installs without issue. If you believe that yours does not have enough tension, then add a little tension by hand. If it whines or makes a funny noise, you know it's too tight. What do you do then??? You retension the belt with less tension!!

Do you see the autotensioner in the diagram with the L-bracket?
